Hi, Gita! From Vrtaška Planina; 2nd picture you can also go left, then at the end of the meadow follow a nice unmarked path (cross fence, wire rope), which brings you directly above Peričnik Waterfall, then along Triglavska Bistrica to the car... Scenic, exposed and nice. LPk

Hi, kamenček! Thanks for this... yeah we've heard about this path already... yesterday we enjoyed the top so much that time was pushing us hard and we descended quickly on the known path... so it'll come on the next visit, and that one over Črlovec too ... and we'll combine them into a nice loop variant...

@GITA, with your photos you "caused" that today my friend and I set off from Mojstrana over Vrtaški vrh to the Ridge. And probably we saw the same chamois, one even showed us the path on Njivice.

Yesterday at first light we headed from Mojstrana uphill towards the Ridge. The steepness just wouldn't end until Vrtaška Planina. The path gets interesting when views open to the Julian Alps peaks and also Karavanke. The path was quite solitary, we met the first hikers when we were already leaving the summit. Views were nice despite clouds. Practically no snow on the path, but ground frozen in places. Despite less interesting initial part, we happily conquered another two-thousander.

On Sunday we went to the Ridge from Črlovec meadow, which is otherwise more popular start for Kukova Špica. The unmarked path is relatively easy to follow, but better stay on it, not like us who went off memory and got properly tangled on one of Črlovec side tongues. Still wonderful day and fantastic views over Vrata valley and Martuljek mountains. Attaching summit photo, some others posted on my blog at link: From Vrata to Vrta Ridge.

Interested in current conditions for Saturday hike to both mentioned peaks and how far the trail is trodden etc. Best and safe steps

Rarely anyone treads to Vrta Ridge, more to Vrtaški vrh and mostly locals. Further over Njivice there's still quite a way to the top and in current conditions solo hiker in mountains has little chance to break through meter-deep snowdrifts. Snowshoes necessary, on wind-packed steep will need to even walk carefully if avalanche conditions allow at all?.

New snow does not pose an obstacle to the approach to the summit. On Vrtaška planina there are a few cm, then the elevation gradually increases. On sun-exposed slopes it is south-facing, wet and melts quickly. In shaded areas and gullies there is still a lot of old snow, which sinks in places, you need to search a bit for the right direction.

What about the connection from Sleme to Vrata? I haven't noticed anyone going down there. LP

Descent from Sleme to Vrata is possible via several variants. The most difficult is pathless directly from the summit towards Mali Črlovec. We descend through demanding terrain (loose scree) searching for the easiest passages. We reach an unmarked hunters' path, then follow it right towards Veliki Črlovec. Before it we can turn left and via unmarked path reach the Mojstrana-Vrata road. Or we cross Veliki Črlovec and continue on unmarked path. We reach the road between Poldov rov and Turk's rov, with some luck directly to Aljažev dom. Or from Sleme descend back to Njivice, find the mentioned hunters' path on the right and descend via one of the mentioned variants. If descending back to Vrtaška planina, then turn right on it, go to its end, here cross the fence on the left and descend via hunters' trail to Peričnik. This is the variant we took this time: https://picasaweb.google.com/107783548072994072771/VrtaskoSleme09042012#

Today on Sleme. No snow on the path, a bit of mud but nothing bad. No livestock on the planina yet, but met only one lost sheep on the path. lp

that sheep has obviously been wandering along the path for a few days, I met it already on Friday and it even kept me company for part of the path

On the second photo the path from Njivice to Vrata is clearly visible. The PP also follows this path.

Path from the foot to the summit dry. Some livestock on the pastures, but even that drinks from the water intake at the shepherd hut on the planina. So take drinks in the backpack. Something to drink can also be gotten from the shepherd on the planina, if not out with the livestock.
