Since the current conditions in the mountains regarding snowpack stability are poor, I found an instructive post by an experienced touring instructor from Val d'Isère and the first avalanche conditions evaluator Peter Hardy for issuing permits (where, if at all) for their guides and client groups. In the article he states that he somehow sniffs the air sideways and then turns towards the slope with a subtle sense. This probably determines moisture and snow smell, processing along with probably performing a previous avalanche test. At the end of the description important guidelines are given on how to behave when caught in an avalanche, among them the most important, that a little before the avalanche deposits us (becomes static and compresses into itself and hardens due to mass), we are then most active with hands and feet (stay on surface), finally making an empty space in front of the face with hands for breathing. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/snowandski/france/val-disere/8254438/Val-dIsere-avalanche-is-it-safe-to-ski-off-piste.html

In the above article under the title Related articles there are also two instructive links about assessment and help for those buried in an avalanche.

In Dolenjska it's increasing hour by hour. Official data for N.M. is 31 cm, but in Podgorje villages much more. On Gorjanci even much more. Regards, now let's go break trail.

I have to write something myself about the measured snow height in our mountains!!! I can only smile at the post that there's 50cm snow in our mountains at 1500m! Yesterday I visited Smrekovec since I'm from these parts and let me tell you there's already snow at Pudgarskem (1030m) from Črna direction towards Smrekovec ca. 60cm, I won't talk about 1500m height because there's almost 1m snow plus every 100m from Krnesa direction towards Komnu drifts at least 2-3m high and walking is extremely difficult. If anyone wants proof I can send pics or even better go check yourself the exceptional "winter" in these ends of our beautiful Slovenia... Best to all

Yes, it's really worth seeing...in summer once just take some time to view that linden and then "swing by" Smrekovec too and you'll have a really nice day for an outing! Best

By road it's 10 km from the linden to the hut on Smrekovec. You can drive a few km by car and then go e.g. past the Black Lake towards Krnes and Komn, that's ca. 2h normal walking.
