Mitterstein is 2417 meter high peak and is part of the Dachstein Mountains. The peak is located 1.0 km south-southwest of peak Niederer Gjaidstein. The nearest mountain hut is Simonyhütte, located 3km northwest. A little further is bivouac Modereck. 1.4 km southwest from the summit there is glacier Schladminger Gletscher, 4 km west from the summit there is also glacier Großer Gosaugletscher. South of the summit is the valley Preunegg.
