I wonder if someone went via Hanzlova from the hut at Gozd, what the conditions are. Crampons and ice axe mandatory or just crampons suffice? Thanks for any info.

Hanz route: beautiful and strenuous but without proper gear don’t risk it, it can cost you dearly. A few years ago with only an ice axe I had a partial slip; it never crosses my mind anymore to leave crampons at home. Safe steps and happy return to the valley I wish all hikers.

I'm a path marker member, I work to my abilities or as much as my free time allows, but I'll tell you this: if we picked up cans and bottles left by our mountain and forest visitors (pigs) there wouldn't be time for any other work. As for cyclists I have nothing against adrenaline rides but not on pastures and marked paths since a lot of effort is invested for the path to survive, water does its thing, believe me, there's no need for cyclists to destroy it in their own way and I would also emphasize that every cyclist should be aware if there are injuries on a marked path (knock down or graze a hiker) they bear full responsibility for that, brains in hands and not in feet and arms.

But we first go flat, like walking on hills, but the safest is to come back to the valley alive. LP

I would join the previous warning about snowfields, even if it is just a few steps from them, one slip can be fatal: so be careful, don't play heroes and heroics, use ice axes and crampons; if you don't have them with you, better turn back, the mountain will wait, an opportunity for a repeat ascent will also be found. Safe step and happy return to the valley.

This sign with a magnificent view of the north face of PRISOJNIK stands on the right side of the road to VRŠIČ on the parking lot three turns from KOČA NA GOZDU.

I'd buy touring bindings SILVRETTA preferably not too expensive. If someone has, let me know. Desired price and tel. for contact.

Markacists use ordinary tesarol paint; before the action in the evening I add a bit of nitro thinner, mix well and leave open overnight. The paint thickens a bit, so it's easier to work. We order the paint from the president and he procures it, since we all use the same paint. As for durability, yes, that's how it is: paint the marking 2x so it holds for a while and during the annual inspection renew those that are already bad as needed.nasmeh

One option is to buy MAXBRIL spray which is used for car trims, hang the parka on a hanger and spray it evenly, it creates a protective layer that helps a lot in rain, but it's not very durable, you have to repeat the process before going on a trip. MAXBRIL also works if you spray sleds or skis then lightly wipe with soft paper and from my own experience I tell you: snow doesn't stick to them and speed increases too. If someone uses my advice, let them report back and say how much truth there is in it.

I absolutely advise against this route: to dizzy people and hikers who are not at least basically skilled in a bit of climbing. The route is secured but very, very airy, with very few spots on this route where the hiker can rest and have a snack. Mostly it's vertical rock; at the very exit to the saddle it's also crumbly, so you have to be quite careful, a bit more than on other ferratas since it's significantly harder than the others, which my predecessor already emphasized. And to all together HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010, safe steps and safe return to the valley.

To all hikers, trail markers and other mountain lovers: HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010, especially safe steps and safe return with nice memories of the trip to the valley.

I myself have CASIO (200e) I paid for it almost two years ago, I can tell you they are not the most accurate (altitude) especially in bad weather, in sunny +- 4 meters. The watch or altimeter depends on the barometer which mostly auto-adjusts. My fellow from the hills has SUNTO and it shows much more accurately for him. Don't rush the purchase, better wait a bit for some more advice. LP

I agree with the predecessor; every path is described in the mountaineering guide, some are described by difficulty (difficult pathless terrain, or just pathless terrain). So please, before commenting, make sure where each path belongs among marked paths or pathless terrain. It is just that some go on a path that is partially secured with a cable (zajno); of 5 bolts, 1 has loosened, the other 4 still hold, then there is whole panic that it needs to be fixed right away. Of course, hikers should point it out, but it is necessary to at least partially describe what repairs are needed, because for small repairs two suffice, for bigger repairs an action is organized, which depends on the free time left besides the job. To all hillwalkers and others, I wish merry holidays, good luck, and a safe step in 2010.

To your question how long I have been participating: 8 years, of which good 4 years without course (license). Don't misunderstand me, I am not among the most diligent either, there are other obligations too, but I try to participate in group actions which often take place on Saturday or Sunday since during the week there is no time for major repairs. The problem is also in the organization itself, that there are more of us but we are tied to jobs so sometimes two or three are enough since one alone can hardly work (except marking) because it is not only that work, there is a lot of other work which is sometimes tied to group work and it is sometimes hard to set the date for the action. I joined voluntarily without obligations but it is like that that one must show willingness to work not only at the beginning (so that they send you to the course to get the trail marker badge), then it all fades (main thing I have the badge) WRONG, this can last only one year, if you are not active anymore they don't extend it, because if you don't work the president can't submit the annual report on work actions and the work of each individual on which the extension depends, so one must make a little effort not to appear lazy. Trail markers work each in their own district for a daily wage payment around 13 e. If a path is not marked then something is wrong: lack of time, uninformed about this part, organization of the trail markers section responsible for this part, or the path is not in the register of hiking paths (there not marked). Some sections have lots of paths, few trail markers and can't renew all at once, you must also be aware that paths and path sections which are generally more dangerous have priority. Hikers, if you have the desire for this work, contact trail markers in your municipality, and they will be glad for your joining them, there you will be informed about the procedures for performing this work.
