Hi, next month I plan to enroll in an alpinism course. I'm interested if anyone has experiences or comments, praises,.. I'm thinking of Freeapproved and AO Kranj. Thanks for the info and best regards

I'd go anywhere else but Freeapproved, but that's just me and my opinion. AO Kranj is MUCH better choice for me! But it's still pretty cool to go, because you learn quite a lot, meet lots of folks with similar interests,... otherwise it's OK too, because you can see what suits you what not (ski touring, friction climbing, climbing, ice climbing...) and borrow plenty of gear from older members.

Why yes and why no? Otherwise I think only someone who visited both courses could give a realistic opinion. There might be a problem here, because you'd attend one already with knowledge.

As I heard it's like this... If your primary goal is alpinism as top sport and you really want to climb in mountains very actively at highest level and if official titles are important to you then go to Kranj. If good company is important to you and if there's something else in the world for you besides alpinism go to freeapproved. They are pretty cool company, I met them parking in crags and we kinda laughed at them. Anyway check both websites a bit and go to presentation meetings. Costs you nothing and you'll decide easier. Good luck!

Hi! I'm wondering if there's any AO or alpinism school that does NOT have lectures on Thursdays. So far I only know Freeapproved... THANKS for the answer! TC

Come tomorrow to our crew in Kranj, where we have an introductory lecture. Everything is on our site, as for where is better and how it is, if you ask me: every crew offers knowledge, every crew has answers to your questions. When you want to climb, at the start you'll ask alpinists if someone takes you or older trainees. That's it because you're not skilled in all maneuvers and need mileage for the hills. But long bolted routes can be climbed pretty fast. Sure, the company must fit too and so you quickly find with whom you match and start collecting mileage. I'm very glad to be part of the Kranj crew and that I enrolled with them.

Since I'm a member of AO Kranj, I call it our ferajn, otherwise alpinism section Kranj, which has an intro lecture today for those interested in how things go in our alpinism section.

SilvestrO: And from which village are you? That you bitch around the forum because of totally unimportant things. Huh?

SilvesterO is totally right. Who gives you the right to mess with corruptions like "ferajn" and similar. German "Verein" is simply society with us. If someone needs German masters, just go across Karavanke. I advise him but not to meet Carinthian Slovenes on the way, 'cause they'll interrogate his pants. Gasperv - you probably aren't from village, from hamlet and illiterate, yet very bold to claim knowledge of Slovenian is "totally unimportant thing". In one word "Holy simplicity".

I don't know exactly how it is in other sections. AŠ Kamnik: the older you are, the more you pay up to 30 years one price, from 30 to 35 another price, over 35 years then 1000 eur or 1500 eur The program is nowhere written.

As far as I know, it's because in the section they work on the youth who will keep AO upright in the future. The second thing is that apparently in the past older people exploited cheap AŠ prices for their excursion goals and with a higher price they try to eliminate such cases. If your goal is a couple of harder excursions and not climbing in general, just hire a guide, because it's really senseless to hinder the whole AŠ because of that. so the comment "no thanks" refers only to the AŠ price in Kamnik?

tol, when you're once over 35, you'll find that a sufficient reason too to rather join elsewhere, where they don't engage in price discrimination....

I didn't say anywhere that this is right. It's just a consequence of events and they decided to "fix" it, of course I don't quite agree with their pricing policy. I would tackle such things differently myself, but one third again differently,... Elsewhere prices are from 200+ EUR for students to 260+ EUR for others And if we're already on the "pricing" policy of mountaineering clubs and alpinist sections.... Climbing schools price 140+ EUR on the other side there are a couple of clubs that offer the same knowledge, in smaller groups for a mere 20 EUR. And everyone is satisfied, the instructor just doesn't earn anything and does it all voluntarily... price is just a matter of the individual and their wallet.
