Alpinism School

I don't understand why AO Tržič specifically if you're coming from the Kamnik area. AO Kamnik is a very good section, likewise the Ljubljana sections.

Lectures and meetings are usually on Thursdays, group tours on Saturdays (not every Saturday).

Dunno, somehow got stuck on Tržič. Heard from one that it's ok. If earlier for Kamnik, probably for Kamnik nasmeh

Anyone been to alpinism school in AO Kamnik?

Today I was at intro lecture at one of alpinism schools. Found out without driving license can't do the school. Lectures weekdays, practical on weekends at crags where no transport options, so didn't even sign up. Theory part very late and hard with public transport.
Interested if possible other way to get alpinism knowledge like abseiling and knots? Basically goal just to reach harder peaks like Rokavi, Prevčev stolp, Široka peč, Mali Prisank, Zeleni kup... and later some 4000ers... Anyone suggestion how to get desired knowledge? Mountain guides out, no unlimited funds to hire per peak. Any weekend courses accessible by public transport? Or anything without driving license. Also no company or friends, so that option out now.

Thanks for suggestion. But both more or less on alpinism level. Wanted few years ago one winter course, but stuck on transport...

Check this page: https://alpirocnik.rasica.org/index.php/Glavna_stran

It's a textbook for the alpinism school, meaning it's similar to the car exam: one is the theory, the other is the practical part, for the latter you'll need an instructor.

Hard to believe that times have gotten so bad that no one takes you in a car. When climbing, you must trust each other anyway.
For many years I drive my neighbor to the shop and errands, probably the only one around here, others have cars for their own needszavijanje z očmizadrega. Even recently in the evening in the dark a Czech asked me in Krma for a ride to Mojstrana and we wentmežikanje, but in the evening I drive faster than during the day and the car scraped the ground a few times. rokeg, the harder peaks you mention seem in the "picture book" of social networks the most logical next step in mountaineering, but it's far from the only way to progress "forward". Some are worthwhile goals, others less so; what's common to all (in my opinion) is that there's no need to worry about them in real life if currently there's no possibility to climb them. Give time time and eventually you'll find company and a way to get closer to that world. Meanwhile, it's worth trying beyond high mountains too - hills and mid-mountains offer a huge amount and everywhere there are huge numbers of ways to create super stories. Not just in hiking, potentially also in cycling, running...

For safe (independent) movement in the world of alpinism, you simply have to physically attend an alpinism school. Neither just theory nor just practice with someone who either is an alpinist or just thinks so is enough. Guides have those prices for a reason. If none of that is feasible, you stick to lower or less demanding goals. All other options are just gambling with an already very risky activity.

Matic, thanks for the link, I already know the theory, but I have no practice.
ljubitelj gora, no one was willing to offer transport, except one that was 20 km away from my place, which takes me at least 3h on foot, no bus option. Nothing left for me. Then there are instructors who said the risk is too high to take me. Which is already discrimination, but let's leave it. And no peers either.
nJjc, if I compare myself to (even younger) peers, then I'm already falling behind in ascents to harder mountains, mainly due to lack of car and company. I hike alone, no misunderstanding. But my wishes are similar to theirs. There's even a couple here on the portal whose posts I only "lurk" on and then study for days how to get at least to the foot of the mountain. The fact is, I now have by far the most fitness, which I'll probably lose during studies because I won't have mountains nearby.
As for mid-mountains, they work for me in winter. There are cows, snakes in the grass there, and the accessibility of most mid-mountains is the same as high mountains. And it's even hotter, that's why I push higher, to be cooler. In bivouac 3 couldn't even sleep, it was so stuffy, and elsewhere... I also miss many easy 2000ers, and access to Bovec is a problem. I already wanted to go to Bovec with a change in Kranjska Gora, but the bus ALWAYS missed due to delays, so I went on all hard tours and got excited about climbing with fear. Without turning back in Kranjska Gora, because it takes 6h by buses there, but I went to see what a hard mountain looks like. I was ready to turn back, but I always made it, despite all doubts, so I imagined projects of conquering 2000ers etc... But around Kranjska Gora I'm already running out of harder peaks, so only alpinistic ones remain. Before I get the chance to conquer easier ones, I'd like to conquer alpinistic ones while still young.
Cycling I don't like, because I don't like the wind blowing, and I see poorly too, and it already happened that I almost rode under a car because I didn't see it. Running isn't really for me either.
Hammond, how in AO if they don't accept you??? zmeden During studies I'd have golden time, but they don't want me jezenjezenjezen Lower goals are already boring. 1 mountain visit is enough for me. Especially on marked paths only 1x, because paths like to Vrh Vršica from Kranjska Gora, to Kamniško sedlo from Bistrica, to Kokrsko sedlo and elsewhere are so destroyed that I have no interest in going there. And so much nettles and other bushes, ouch. Just this year I got bad burns going from Jesenice to Golica, only nettles and one weird plant burned me so badly, ouch...
Martuljek I like for that reason, not many people, and lots of orientation loops for variety, and little easy paths.
Say the whole eastern Slovenia is unknown to me, because they are hard to access, I was only where I was with family, all the rest is hard to access, because even to Ljubljana I barely make it for the weekend, even there at AP waiting is tedious for me, and then I'm already nervous if the bus will come at all, and what I'll do if I get stuck without a bus somewhere... This is happening far too often this year. No train, no bus, and then I have to call a taxi, and 50-100 EUR goes to nothing. Then I have less left for all alternative "treatments" for poor eyesight, because someday I hope it improves, somehow. nasmeh

Ah, project of conquering 2000ers ... come on, those are concepts set by others that don't hold water when you look closely. That perception isn't close to me, because with a slightly different unit many peaks would come in (or aside), especially due to occasional question what counts as peak or not and if unnamed elevations count etc. Result is some list with a surprisingly arbitrarily drawn line, above which peak has "value" and below less. That's an approach illogical to me and seems like an extension of the fame of the magic 2000 line, which in mountaineering imagination takes too much weight anyway. Consequence is climbing e.g. disgusting crumbly Vrh nad Muzici and overlooking crazy beautiful Mala Ratesko Ponca?
Recommend less nitpicking and more adaptive thinking, because with the latter the set of possible tours for a hiker stretches a lot a lot a lot. And risk your head less. nasmeh

If repeating isn't for you, think that many paths have even 8 variants: spring, summer, autumn and winter, and sunny and cloudy versions thereof. No need to always chase new. It'll be fine!

If I understood correctly you're in high school?

If you plan to go study, you'll have opportunity to join AO, where they'll teach you knots, abseiling etc. So waiting those couple years no problem, regarding fitness I think you're worrying too much that you'll lose it.

Why don't they accept you? Because of poor eyesight? AO wants as healthy and young specimen as possible, from which later something useful for the club will come. Others either pay more, give up earlier themselves or not accepted at all. Selection definitely there is. But it's such activity that if no selection before, then after. And responsibility for the other (with fatal outcome?) they maybe want to avoid. I assume, can't claim.
Biggest benefit of 2000 project is discovering new areas you maybe never would otherwise. Rest is highly questionable. Many surprises positive, some such that you wish never had the list. About (doubtful) criteria n3jc already said all. Maybe add only that all elevations over 2000 in Slovenia I think somewhere between 6000 and 8000 or so - don't remember exact number, but good illustration how futile "conquering all" is.
And this: if you don't like grass and bushes, won't go far. To conquer many Trentar peaks you need to make little doctorate from grass. velik nasmeh

n3jc, no mistake, I collect or check off in list also peaks between 1000 and 1999 m, as well as up to 999 m. For latter problem lots of peaks that are private or in gardens. Lists not final yet and I update them ongoing, as well as 2000ers list. All lists "imported" from OSM, so everything with name and elevation. Please now not with how OSM unreliable etc..., because I exactly know how things work there.
I conquer also really unimportant little peaks, say Stan on way to Macesnovec. Around Snežnik I have most peaks checked. When mentioning Mala Rateška Ponca, I was there, and some around winking.
Vrh nad Mužici I'd conquer at ridge traverse from Vrtaško Sleme to Kukova špica, of course with proper knowledge. Definitely not hardest peak, Mali Prisank much harder.
Otherwise it's just guide so I know where I could still go.

coffee, no, finished high school already, going to uni. Wanted to join AO on Thursday, but turned away with driving license and poor eyesight risk. I'll lose it, because won't have long steep climbs for training anymore like in Notranjska, on Coast not even hills.

Hammond, yes, because of poor eyesight. And I'm not at all guilty for being like this, approx know cause, won't speculate here (why), if someone interested, write PM. Fact is, I just wanted to learn knots and abseil. Don't intend to climb routes either, because not into real wall climbing. Only up to IV, to get to Prevčev stolp and Vrh Rokavskega grebena. Yes, instructors afraid because don't know how much I really see, and issue also that I mentioned no driving license and don't know how to get to crags on weekends.
Collect only named peaks. Anyway molehills alone between Škrlatica ridge and Rokavov some 1000.
Know exactly what Trentar hills are like, have about 6 peaks checked there. Tempted by all others, only Pihavci questionable for now.

Bottom line, only option AO or mountain guides. For latter need to hit lottery to go to 65 peaks (not all 2000 m, some around 1900 m), which I think too hard now, and where are 4000ers and other tempting hills abroad and world. eek

Well, if something to encourage you, I do 250m elevation couple times a week for training/walk, and I think I'm still in decent shape. For Pelci don't need olympic standard either. Anyway, don't despair. nasmeh

It's very relative which variant is harder. The main difference is that knots and rope descent knowledge won't help with climbing up. Sometimes it's really just descent over the biggest difficulties and then you can solo (if capable, not everyone), elsewhere someone must belay you.
You can approach Vrh nad Mužici via Kukove prode and avoid the ugly ridge you mention. On Mali Prisank without a belaying partner it's pure lottery. I advise against solo. The key spot on Prevčev stolp is the traverse from Goličice V-, before that another four (for both it's suitable that someone belays you). You also won't get to Turn pod Razorjem alone, you'll need to be in a team. At Pihavci the descent is hardest, over the technically hardest spot you can descend on rope. Every hill has its characteristics and if you tackle it wrong, with lacking knowledge or without a partner, the price is high. As I see, you're somewhere in between now. Make sure the peak doesn't mean more to you than proper preparation for it.

look, winter is coming, write a couple of lines about wanting to learn certain skills needed for safe movement in rock. What exactly do you want. Then copy/paste and send to all possible addresses you find on the web. To GV, clubs, d.o.o., all pros in the field. And try to arrange with someone a "private" two- or three-day course in a mountain hut, high mountains, and go through theory and practice in that time. Something like courses "safe movement in mountains in winter", say, only this time for rock. Trying is no sin, they say, a word is no horse mežikanje

And don't tell them that you're visually impaired etc., because obviously it doesn't bother you at all, since you've been on so many peaks! Obviously you see quite enough for this activity. For driving a car though - as it seems - no. But that really doesn't concern them.

Coffee, well yeah, thanks for the encouraging words.
Hammond, opinions are always subjective. Obviously I'll really need to find a climbing partner too, and that was also the reason for AO... But, I don't even have anyone for Šmarna gora. With all the people I've gone with, I've gone only 1x. With all who had a car, it bothered them that I don't have one, and all who didn't have a car, that I'm too good for them (in walking speed, climbing and of course coordinating and catching bus schedules, so no one waits too long....)
Well, obviously my 10 two-thousanders will remain unconquered forever, as well as a few 100 peaks up to 999 m.
Thanks for the peak descriptions. As I see, you've been to some of the mentioned ones already. So they are accessible, if there's only will and path.
turbo, maybe I will, that's why I asked here if someone can suggest who would teach me the basics, of course for payment, at least knots and abseil, so at least conquer Rokave, Zvonike and Gamsovke.

Macesna, I don't want to tell anyone about flaws, but what else should I answer to the question "why don't you have a driver's license? No other excuse will be good, because it'll turn out later that it's not true. Of course, for every other excuse it's then expected that I'll do it soon.
Well, it already hinders me somewhat, especially because I don't notice people and bump into them, don't see a tree hanging over me because I look under my feet... that's why I often wear a helmet right down to the valley and don't mind if they look at me strangely. Only last year I forgot that I hadn't taken it off yet and carried it the whole road from Vrata to Peričnik before I realized...big grin

rokeg, accessibility is not the question, the problem is only how much we've grown to the challenge we set ourselves. Then many things become (in)accessible. Everyone has their limits.
I've been to all mentioned and many others.
