Alpinism School

Print
fanči1. 10. 2010 10:31:30
I was at the introductory meeting of AS Kamnik. I'm older than 35 and my goal isn't a couple of harder trips. In the classroom there were about 30 of us by my estimate... mostly younger. I immediately thought there's no room for me here. I still listened to what they had to say. And indeed as "tol" says, they presented the strategy and working with youth preferably around 20 years old. And I agreed that they want 12 members who will become a team and maybe someday real alpinists and bring something useful to the section in the future. But when the young guy started with the prices I thought that's too much. I soon left the classroom. It's true they don't have a published program and we didn't get it either. They just briefly mentioned what they would do in their AS. I don't agree with you "tol" that if you're older you hinder the AS... I think those of us deciding to attend AS at this age know what it means and we can also assess our abilities and the seriousness of the visit might even be greater. According to the AS Kamnik rules there's no upper age limit, you need to present your difficult or very difficult trips, you need to do a test trip... and regarding the favorable price: for me personally price is unimportant if I want to gain knowledge. And also: I sent my application, from which my year of birth was visible, by email to both guys who will lead the AS and they could have nicely arranged that the strategy is "work on youth" and believe me, I would have stayed home. There are other sections and AS where older ones won't hinder the work. Seriousness and commitment isn't a matter of "youth".

@fanči

regarding older ones I wrote
"The other thing is that apparently in the past older ones exploited the favorable AS prices for their excursion goals and with higher price they try to eliminate such cases. If your goal is a couple of harder trips and not climbing in general, just hire a guide, because it's really senseless to hinder the entire AS because of that.
"

That doesn't mean every older person hinders the AO or AS. The guys just had such experiences that many people "snuck in" just for guided trips on harder routes.
And you pay the price, those over 35 who still want to seriously tackle the matter.

Don't misunderstand me, I'm of the opinion that the condition or if selection is made, it should be by key:
-what you already know
and
-prerequisite at least basic climbing course completed

The latter is covered at the beginning of AS, but you don't have mileage if you don't climb at least one season to get some basics. And continuing from these basics would be smart, and AS could then be more "productive", not dealing with how to tie a figure-eight etc..

I agree with you tol.
And let me say that I have completed a sports climbing course and also some climbing behind me. So I was starting from those basics and thinking like you, that the next level is AS.
And nothing wrong if they have such strategy in Kamnik but the way is not exactly praiseworthy.

In AO Celje there's no matrix of such discriminations, except for paying the tuition. They accept everyone regardless of age.

In AO Radovljica:

Students: 150 €
Up to 30 years: 250 €
Over 30 years: 350 €

I wasn't the most satisfied with the school alone, because I expected they would take us somewhere to climb, but they didn't. Lectures were every week, but I would have liked more practice.

Maybe I'll try some other AO sometime.

Bojan, that's how it is, you have to show a lot of self-initiative, and make an effort yourself to get an instructor for climbing, they won't ask you if you want to go climbing somewhere, and if you go to another AO you'll run into the same..., Juš, I don't agree it's cheaper, just look at the prices "individualists" have for courses, those are mostly also mountain guides.

Bojan, then I suggest AŠ at LJ Matica; they have plenty of trips both at home and abroad. Verified because I'm attending that AŠ......

Aha, maybe I'll go next year. Well, if you're a person who has trouble fitting into groups, it's really annoying to find someone to take you climbing (better said, nagging them to exhaustion so they take you at least once). That's why I prefer everything to be settled in advance.

AO Bohinj is free, but it's true it's a bit hit or miss....

I did AŠ in Kamnik myself and gained a lot of knowledge. It's true though that I came to AŠ well under twenty and our school had over thirty members, of which three, at most four, remained, because most were older folks who wanted to learn mountain movement not climbing, and the price was very affordable for them (under 400 € I think....). So I support the guy in that decision, because for learning mountain movement you have guides and other courses. Oh and the prices are appropriate for what they offer in Kamnik, nicely divided by years mežikanje If someone doesn't see themselves here or it's too expensive, I wrote at the beginning, AO Bohinj has free, and day trips aren't expensive either....

with these prices they ain't going nowhere... Then another 5 grand for gear... But the one who does it with pleasure won't mind spending the money. Otherwise you buy gradually. True though once you have it (gear I mean) you have it. nasmeh

Zmaga is an ad from ČAO:
"/.../ There you'll learn all about the course of this year's school and get many encouraging answers, like: "no, no problem if you're afraid of heights, just don't look down...... Too old, ah where, we had an older one once!...... Gear? That's not expensive at all, sell your car and you'll have enough for all the gear, and still some left for the bus ticket!" nasmeh

You can find the school program below; you can also read the responses from this year's participants below. Of course we published only those who were satisfied with the school. /.../" velik nasmeh

* when you drop a water bottle it takes half a minute to hit the ground
* your gear is worth more than your car
* your best memories are from the worst routes
* you've had an excellent climbing day, then you realize you didn't climb the route you wanted
* you survived a night hanging on a sling
