heinz, thanks! Interesting, so there were only two females. And another of my findings. Looks like it's only a winter guest, because it's not even in John Gooders' handbook - Birds of Slovenia and Europe, which I bought in 1998. Somehow I then found out that it belongs to ducks and that it's a European bird. Its only nesting site in Slovenia was observed at Trboje Lake. Little grebe I see in Lake Bled several times.

Thanks, miri... there was a bit of luck too, that it "glided" close enough and the hand was steady enough...

velkavrh Great Northern Diver is not a winter guest, you can encounter it all year. In Upper Carniola it's more common at Bled and both Savas. Probably it was rarer here in the past and that's why it's not in the handbook.

There wasn't a closer shot and that red color misled me. Occasionally up to four great spotted woodpeckers come to our two feeders. It's true that we border the forest. Last year I even spotted a grey-headed woodpecker and a green woodpecker. Apparently he saw a wryneck on the feeder last year - from the woodpecker family. Similar to the green one, the male has a red crown. Not so common.

Bravo, heinz, nice presentation; especially the wryneck. Is this another name for the grey-headed woodpecker, or its own subspecies of the grey-headed woodpecker? It's very beautiful, as is the colorful kalin and overall, what to philosophize! One is prettier than the other, right?

Yes, Pivka or grey woodpecker. Only males have the red colored upper head part.

This morning I saw a blackcap, there were 10-15. Is it possible they are still lingering here or migrating so late? Thanks for the answer.

Yesterday at Sečovlje saltpans I photographed these specimens, but not entirely sure which. Ornithologist, am I right?

No, maybe ornithologist doesn't want our company anymore? No answer to my question either. Regards!

That he hasn't moved away over the winter I'm joking. Let's hope he gets in touch with us again
