I notice the same. Walnuts stay where they were for some time already. No tits, no blue tits. I'm surprised too.

Well not everywhere; yesterday starlings were at New Year's lunch on persimmons, by Vipava I hear blackbirds already chasing. Geese, herons and mallards I've also seen several times today...

For the absence of birds in such a small area as a garden there are many reasons. The first is that individuals we see around the house in summer mostly don't stay with us in winter either, but wander a few km or tens of km around. To our feeders come birds from elsewhere. The second reason is related to the first - as said, birds wander around in winter, so it's possible that there are fewer one year, more another. For example, there are really a lot at ours this year. The third is related to the warm weather in recent days. Birds always prefer food in nature (feeders usually represent at most 10% of all their diet) and since in these warm days they find enough, they don't visit feeders so often. If there is any more question, I'll gladly answer

The woodpecker switched to more easily accessible food, but here it was lonelier.

ah no, that's the nickname I gave him. I've heard several different nicknames though. Vrtojbenci call him pikot, my dad called him rdečehlačnik, some call him dohtar za les .

At our place no woodpeckers to see. Don't know why? Just two tiny tits fly in, stuff themselves and fly off. The cat watches below alright, but can't get up top. But we got loads of moles. Which is odd. If this keeps up no need to even plow the garden. We call the woodpecker TOKAČ.

At ours the woodpecker hasn't shown up yet either, though he came every year. We have a special bird "house" for him. Birch trunk drilled with holes where we stuff hazelnuts, walnuts and such and tie it to the trunk of the home plum. Pleasure watching him inspect all holes and empty them. Hope he comes this year too.

He's hanging around nearby all the time. This pic is from 3.1. when figs were still to the top of the crown. But then starling flocks took care of the bulk in a couple visits.

Yesterday we walked the Path of Seven Waterfalls in Croatia. In Buzet Canyon I noticed this panel and figured which birds they are. Corvus corax is raven. Monticola solitarius is blue rock-thrush - don't know this bird. Interesting male color, dark blue. Female similar to starling. In Slovenia nests 10 to 30 pairs. But year-round species of Mediterranean scrub and mountains. Third shown bird -Tachymarptis melba syn. Apus melba. Newly renamed to Alpine swift. It's alpine swift.
