the crane migration season is starting! These are large, noisy birds that fly in V-shaped flocks. In Slovenia we are collecting data on their migration, so we ask you to forward information about observations of migrating flocks. Important data are date and time, location, number of individuals (estimate), direction and flight altitude. Thanks and best

These strange short winters with maybe 10 days below 0 are obviously over, cranes are really returning already. Today five flocks, total about 1000 birds from 11h to 15h. Largest one on the picture, if anything visible as they flew very high. All flew in eastern direction, observed above sp Vipava valley. The last flying opposite direction I noticed 30.12., so not even two months wintering.

On Saturday 25.2 observed three flocks of cranes over Vipava valley towards Razdrto (SE). First at 11 ca 50 pcs, second 14.30 ca 100 pcs and third 15.30h also ca 100 pcs

Crane migrations not over yet; at 13.30 flock of some 200 birds in flight over north edge of Kras between Fajtov hill and Trstelj. They flew high so I barely caught them on picture.

Today at 3pm loud flock of about 100 cranes over Utik, flying towards Koseze.

Maybe those were right above me around 1pm, but they didn't have a proper GPS as they were just circling and calling loudly. Otherwise today was again a day of mass migrations, as I saw the first flock of approx 200 already around 8am, then about 100 around 1pm, quarter of an hour later flock of 250 birds. Last around 3pm about 100.
