On Tuesday evening around 21:30 we arrived at bivouac III, where we comfortably slept till 4am when the alarm woke us. Goal: Jugova grapa and Dovški Cross. We headed across scree to the gully entrance at Three Larches. We didn't go direct to the Larches but one gully towards Široka peč as it was snowier. Snow starts with tongues below Larches, continuous above. Lots of snow still but heat made it sink deeply in places even to knees, icy underneath soft layer. Conditions in Jugova grapa not ideal for ascent due to too much sinking. Exit to ridge is a mix of snow, bare rock and ice so be careful. Despite cloudy weather, nice views near and far from the top. Conditions fully springlike on the limit for hiking; for ski touring I don't do it but doubt it's pleasant on such soft base. But good thing: «water as much as you want, no thirst» . Safe travels.

For the end of vacation also Dovški Cross. This time Čez Brinje path. Path steep all the way, flattens only at nice viewpoint - Brinova glava. First to Šplevta while views lasted, then to Dovški Cross. No specials on path, plenty of cairns show the way. Back to Šplevta and to valley past bivouac II at Jezerih. Scree led me a bit too far into forest and I probably did part of path my own way Pictures: http://www.petersfoto.si/thumbnails.php?album=datebrowse&date=2017-07-22 http://www.petersfoto.si

That scree doesn't lead you too far, if it does then you jump ...deep down ..and since obviously you didn't, you were probably within standard bounds or maybe you really discovered something new?

A bit before the jump you'd splash into water. (if anything still flows)

Of course. Maybe I expressed myself wrongly. The fact is, as soon as I left the scree, I lost the path in the forest for a while and found it lower down again. No big deal. Not the first time, not the last.

Today in solitude via Brinova glava to Dovški križ. To Brinova glava is dry, we put on crampons exiting the forest at the start of the scree. Snow was hard as concrete in the morning. To saddle under Šplevta some dry sections but we could avoid them. From saddle onwards more dry terrain, so crampons scraped rocks several times. From top descended to bivouac then down Rdeči potok valley to valley. To waterfall still on snow, slope descent completely dry, below stepped on avalanche debris. On it roughly to 1100m a.s.l. If anyone goes via Amphitheater, blue arafatka lies there somewhere, wind took it from me.

Did you meet any chamois on the way to Brinova?

Almost. Monday 21.5. to the pre-summit before the notch. Snowfield starts somewhere in the first third between the cave and Matterhorn and persists to the walls of Rokavi and Oltarji. Rest dry. Stream still some "hollow" snow. Chamois still but not so dense as on the upper photo. Good day to test gear

From valley to summit Dovški Cross yesterday met only chamois. Fog cleared above Brinova glava. Snow under summit here and there ankle-deep. Scree descent always a pleasure.

Are Kukova and Dovški comparable? Plenty of cairns? Thinking of going to explore these ends a bit

Appropriately comparable, neither overly demanding. Plenty of cairns, tracks of predecessors too. Last part to Dovški Cross may outline a somewhat serious tour, but approach to Gulce more unpleasant than ascent to saddle above bivouac, no big difference. No real climbing or route-finding, but ascent through crumbly gully to summit a bit annoying. Boldly on the path, just ascend past Brinjeva Glava and descend past bivouac, if knees are dear.

Yeah, definitely, Kukova is really undemanding if there are so many cairns up the path from bivouac to Dovški, really no problem if comparable, going to Dovški this year too thanks for answer, but one more; where it branches off to Brinjeva Glava so not on scree banging fingers
