I'd go to Kamnik Saddle, but I don't know which and what would be the most suitable route. I'm talking about a one-day trip. confused:

Hello, there are several paths to Kamniško sedlo. The most well-known are probably the path from Kamniška Bistrica and the path from Logarska dolina via Okrešelj. I have been on both and think that the path from Kamniška Bistrica is easier and not very demanding, if you start from the last parking lot (where the forest road ends). The path from Logarska dolina is a bit more demanding, as there are cables and pegs in certain sections. Not very demanding, but still. Both paths are nice and suitable also for those with less fitness. LP Tina

Definitely from Kamniška Bistrica or planina Jermanca. Suitable even for the slowest hiker as a one-day tour. Good luck!

On Saturday I went from Kamniška Bistrica to Kamniško sedlo. Morning fog in the valley up to around 1400-1500m, at the top a fairytale!!! Crazy sun, view of the fog lying below so thick you could cut it. And the hut will now be open on weekends in nice weather, which is great. Really wonderful day for the hills!

I'm curious about the conditions at Kamniško sedlo? If possible, who has been up there the last few days. Thanks for the reply. lp

On 20.12 I was up there, weather fantastic and quite a few mountain lovers, I was especially happy and surprised because the hut was open and with such pleasant company the "borovničke" really went down well. There's lots of snow but the path is well trodden so gaiters are fine while crampons will probably stay in the backpack. A few more pictures

Very nice pictures. Do you maybe know anything about whether the hut is open other weekends too if nice weather, or was it just by chance that day?

Yes probably every "nice" weekend open - otherwise on PD Kamnik website Wednesday or latest Thursday they post if it will be open.

Hm, just now (23.12. at 16.20) I read this on PD Kamnik website: "Hut at Kamnik Saddle will be closed this weekend (20-21.12)." Looks like they are a bit "behind" with page update, and the info is wrong.

Well, let's wait until Thursday because I got this info right in the hut and this weekend the hut was really open again after longer bad weather...

I'm wondering how long it took you to get to the top and if there's any danger from avalanches?

No major danger from avalanches, especially if you go on the established path - from K.B. to the top I took a bit over 3 hours of moderate walking although I admit the last meters to the top the legs were a bit heavy.

And did you go from the hut in Kamniška Bistrica?

Considering that the hut at the saddle was open for the weekend(s), I assume there are no major avalanche risks? (even with nice weather forecasted for next week)? Has anyone been up there?

Hi. On Saturday, 27.12.2008, I was at Kamnik Saddle, start from Kamn. Bistrica. Larger amounts of snow start from Pastirci, where I preventively put on crampons and they came in handy. The weather was bad, quite windy, of course cold, but with willpower you can overcome everything. The snow was compact and there were no problems, I arrived at the saddle in three hours, back even faster in an hour. Two caretakers came a bit behind me, so the hut was open this weekend too, schnapps hit the spot. I recommend it..

Well, on Saturday also a quick trip to Kamnik Saddle. Already snowing in Celje in the morning, so the ascent from Kamniška Bistrica was really fairy-tale-like. Snow starts at the cable car station and increases with height, where you cross two avalanches still in the forest. The whole way strong, really strong wind erasing tracks and fog, but still super and when you reach the top and they open the hut right under your nose, nothing better. Had crampons, though it would go without them too, but... Descent BP. Super!!!

I was up there on Saturday too. Reached the top around 9:40. As rozka wrote. Strong wind and fog. I put on crampons too and took the ice axe from the backpack and went up directly over the scree under Planjava, where there was less powder snow than on the normal summer marked path. For those saying no need for crampons and ice axe to Kamnik Saddle. When descending from the saddle, a hiker going up with poles slipped. He stopped about 10-15 m lower. He was lucky there was plenty of powder snow that helped him stop. If it had been frozen, it could have ended differently. Just a reminder to those who look strangely at us who go with crampons and ice axe.

On Monday the weather was beautiful again, the snow is now quite variable and crampons are welcome in some places, poles almost mandatory - if tempted by the scree under Planjava, be very careful not too close to the walls as I saw on the return at least two small avalanches on the scree which would end badly for a hiker. Happy 2009 everyone!
