Velesa, if at exposed spot you have only crampons you're far from safe. Don't forget in slip you arrest with ice axe not crampons. On forum some keep saying no high mountains or exposed paths without ice axe and crampons but doesn't help much. And don't forget even those two far from 100% safety. Good luck!

Velesa, use the ice axe too, we didn't give it for looks.

Without tall mountain boots today it was still ok (I went with low ones as the tall ones were accidentally left at home), but without microspikes no way. Well, yes, on your ass

Hi - my first post I was up there yesterday. From 20 - 45 switchbacks you need crampons, because it's nicely icy. Lower it's bare, higher there's nice packed snow. Well some went without crampons and had quite some problems.

On Saturday my girlfriend and I headed towards Lanževica from Savica. To Komna nothing special, on the way back it might slip a bit, further it was trodden only to the pasture at Kraj, soon after the hut under Bogatin the track stopped. Trudging to Bogatinsko sedlo took us so much energy and time that continuing wasn't sensible. One skier made it to the saddle, the rest turned back... The path along the bottom of Gracija is downright tedious, trapped in snow sinking to the waist and beyond for a good hour... Well, it was still magnificent! I posted photos on my blog, including some from the frozen Bled lake surface. link: Komna photos

Hi! You'll have to join us ski tourers. For us such snow conditions are a piece of cake hihihi. Best regards and safe in the mountains!

End of this week I'm heading to the Julian Alps, specifically Bohinjska planina - valley of Triglav lakes - Komna, and I'm wondering if anyone can advise whether to take snowshoes or if the paths are already hardened, trodden, packed?? Looking at photos from last week's trips but can't decide. thanks for info! best,g.

Snowshoes will probably come in handy, although current conditions are a bit tricky... Lots of snow in hollows, windblown on exposed spots, so there's a chance you'll be putting snowshoes on and off in short intervals... As far as I saw on Saturday the path from Komna to Sedmerih isn't trodden, and some new snow has fallen again... If you have patience and enough drive, go for it, otherwise it'll be pure misery if you get caught in the snow. If you make it, post some photos, I'm interested. best!

joste, "...although current conditions are a bit tricky... Lots of snow in hollows, windblown on exposed spots, so there's a chance you'll be putting snowshoes on and off in short intervals..." we have exactly the same thoughts and that's why I asked to see others' opinions. When I return I'll surely write how it went. g.

from Komna to Bogatinsko sedlo, we broke trail today. But I recommend great caution due to avalanches.

Yeah, isn't it somehow logical that with snow at these temps, especially with such temp swings, something happens? And people, when there's avalanche danger where, everyone has to know for themselves, especially when it's logical... And in the last week it's totally logical... No need to emphasize it more...

Urbancek, here you are wrong! This forum is for reporting current conditions, right? Every warning is welcome, even if it's obvious by itself!

Urbanček only worries about people's gullibility, worries him the fact that they venture into danger that we recognize already far in the valley. He doesn't understand that and wanted to emphasize it. I think this concern is very justified, I think the same myself and tried to point it out with a few posts, then I stopped (this is the last), because you see that then high mountains are still "propagated". So I always write that everyone is responsible for themselves. What can we do, if the mountains are so beautiful, they'll just wait. Good luck everyone.

One thing is the declared general snow avalanche danger, another is weather that can greatly change otherwise long-term stable conditions, third is local knowledge of conditions and fourth, you can always do a snowpack stability test, of course the latter is much harder for those assessing from the valley . Otherwise, safe to all this weekend in the mountains.

Good morning, yesterday I was to Bogatin, the path is quite well trodden, to the saddle is too much risk though, you have the feeling it will just avalanche. LP
