Krasji vrh

svicr9. 03. 2014 22:22:51
The Kobarid-Drežnica road is normally drivable and on Friday, 7.3.2014, we decided on Krasji vrh. Above Drežniške Ravne there was still a lot of broken trees, but diligent locals had already cleared the road and we could drive to Planine by car. At Planina Zaprikraj there was snow only as a sample. Four ski tourers headed under Lopatnik, where they had excellent conditions for skiing, just one drawback on these SW slopes ... no snow down below anymore (150m).
We had it all the way, and it didn't crust. We chose the south route above Koluji. The last ridge below the summit was windblown to grass. At the top there was complete calm, unusually warm for the time, and wonderful views. We returned the same way. It was a pity for the summit part that we didn't have touring gear too.

I started today's tour around 07:00, so the snow was frozen and didn't crust. The path from Drežniške Ravne to Planina Zaprikraj was dry, on the planina almost no snow left. The morning was still cloudy, but it turned into a wonderful day. At the top a strong cold wind was blowing, but still completely alone I enjoyed the magnificent views for some time. velik nasmehnasmeh

I viewed it from the south side twice in the past 10 days (from Kuka last week and from Laščak on Sunday) and it looks dry.

I was there today with my better half. Sun, above Koluji it's bare, past the snow cave there's snow. Snow is soft and doesn't sink too much. Path to Planina Zapleč is quite good, with a normal car you can drive it. Automatic stamp on top is broken, needs at least some quick glue to reattach the pad to the housing.

As Carpinus wrote, stamp still not working, pad with text missing. Conditions excellent, snow starts at 1450 m only on north side, doesn't sink, frozen. Very strong bora, on top in gusts had to brace well.

After three weeks of bad weather had to use today's nice Sunday. So I went to Krasji Peak. Really nice and warm hike, from parking at trough above Drežniške Ravne to summit in two and half hours. Some hundred meters below summit terrain covered with snow, bit more before Snežna jama and to the end. But doable without snowshoes and crampons. On top real bliss and nice view all around, back via koluji.

Stamp on top as it is, if anyone cares.

The decision was already made yesterday for a visit to the mountains, since the weather will soon mess up again. I chose Krasji vrh, as it is currently snow-free, and I haven't been up there for quite a while.
Cold morning at planina Zaprikraj (well, almost mid-December) promised a nice day and it really was.
For the ascent I chose the path past "Kolujev", as it is sunny and scenic.
On the summit it was somewhat windy, however the wonderful panoramic views more than outweighed it.
On the descent I met four Italians puffing towards the summit, no other visitors. Path without peculiarities nasmeh

Today's conditions on Krasji vrh.

Snow on the path started at the bend below the forest clearing. Very little snow, but it mostly covered the path through the forest. The snow was softened by the sun on the top layer, frozen or icy in the lower layer. When the sun was no longer shining, it quickly froze due to the low temperature. Thus, it was harder on descent than on ascent.

The path past kolujev is snowy only in the forest. The grassy part is almost bare all the way to the summit.

The path past Snežna jama was trodden all the way to the bend above the cave, where it turned through the bushes towards the southern slopes. I assume the predecessors ascended to the summit via the SE ridge, since I followed their tracks for part of the path on descent.
To the snow cave and continuing across the ridge, the path was normally passable without winter gear. To the snow cave or the bend above it there is a trodden track. Across the ridge there was very little snow and grasses were still visible.

I continued walking to the ruins. The path was not trodden, or the newly fallen snow and wind had erased the predecessors' tracks. On the mule track to the ruins there was just enough snow to cover the path, which was easily passable to the ruins. Further on, winter gear is necessary both for crossing above the grenade hollow and for the ascent over the last steep slope. There is also more snow on the northern side. It was from hard to frozen, soft in between. On the drifted parts also crusted. The 1 cm crust broke under my weight, but the crampons gripped the hard base well and there were no problems with the ascent.

It is worth taking advantage of the favorable weather forecast for Wednesday, after which snow is expected down to the lowlands.
Photo report follows.

Beautiful day on Krasji vrh on Monday, 26.1.2015 also in pictures. Despite several degrees below zero, the sun warmed well and it was just right warm for hiking in one long sleeve. In the morning, the roaring of the wind was still heard high above the head, but during the hike not even a breeze was felt. Also on the summit there was almost no wind and it was really nice to sit a bit and enjoy the solitude.
