SuzanaM, this spring variant of visiting Krasji vrh seems much friendlier to me than the January one...and these shades of green are unique..Really nicenasmeh

@zlatica but now there are snakes, for which Krasji vrh is quite known. nasmehmežikanje

Ugh, that's not a very pleasant thing...then I really don't know if the spring visit to Krasji vrh is the favorite. Thanks Otiv for this hint...

Thanks everyone. I'm not a fan of snakes myself, which is the result of misguided upbringing that we were all more or less subjected to as kids on this topic.
Snakes are part of nature and in the hills we're stepping into their space, not the other way around.
So far I haven't encountered any on Krasji vrh. But lower in the valley they're most active right in May. I've seen more of them towards Kozjak waterfall or towards Tolminka spring. But they're no anacondas and they slither away so fast I can't even snap a photo. Only once under Krnčica did I manage to photograph a tiny little beauty that was hissing at me furiously (not sure which of us was more scared). As Igor says, snakes are everywhere. Even on city outskirts and in the garden in front of the house. We should fear ticks more, which can be way more dangerous to our health. And there are plenty of snakes in our rivers and lakes too, just look around next time you dip your feet.

Krasji vrh will be even prettier in a week or so, when rhododendron blooms on the north side and dresses the pink path climbing along the edge above the ruins. Sheep come to pasture too. To avoid crossing paths with any woolly one, I got myself a bell on hunters' advice.
the best view of Krasji vrh and the pastures Zapleč and Zaprikraj is from muletjere towards Krnčica - 9.9.141
slečnik - Krasji vrh 13.6.132
kačica under the summit of Krnčica - 27.7.133

Hi! Can anyone tell me what the road to Zapleč high pasture is like? Thanks!

The road is in good condition and drivable for cars as usual. A bit of care is needed when crossing the concrete drainage ditches. Safe travels nasmeh

Yesterday, on St. Nicholas hike to Krasji vrh.

Middle part of the trail was foggy, summit rewarded our effort with sun. Walked a nice figure-eight. St. Nicholas gave us treats as reward. Regards.

Morning visit to Krasji vrh with wife. Up past snow hole, down past Kolujev. Some light snow on north side and summit, no big issues. South side dry.

On May 20, 2006, I hiked here with my Maremmano sheepdog Happy, after 11 years back to this beautiful peak with great panorama with Davide and Dora. Start at Drežniške ravne above Kobarid, or save 30 min by driving partly cemented, partly gravel road to Zaprikaj pasture. Then two-thirds path through scenic forest, then it opens up for loop tour. We turned left first on grassy clearing, checked rail tracks where cannons were set up in war, met nice sheep licking salt from hand.........and reached summit nicely. View is lavish. On return other way saw plenty military fort remains. On trail and top met friendly couple, learned spruce tips collected now for syrup and tea.....got recipe too. Just gotta try it.

See clear weather forecast tomorrow. Could this hike be tricky? Meaning maybe near half meter new snow fallen, not trampled before, probably not tomorrow either. If untracked: slippery like on dry snow? Enough with small crampons and ice axe?
If worse conditions, better drive further on road to Zapleč pasture then from east to summit?
To mentioned parking at ~800m ok?

If you don't recommend this now, maybe Javoršček, Kobilja glava or Mrzli vrh above Pretovč pasture?

Thanks for advice.

mountain lover, thanks for reply. but all those peaks offer views anyway. need more useful info by 9am latest when heading to one of them. not necessary someone just went up now but your past experiences at similar time and conditions would do. thanks in advance.

St. Nicholas hike.

This year there was nice sunny weather. The higher we got, the more snow and wind there was. At the top we quickly turned back.

I start hiking only in the afternoon after 4 pm, a bit further from the village Magozd, at the open barrier the path starts to the right. Need to overcome more than 1400m elevation gain. The sun hid behind clouds, a bit windy, path overgrown in places but always traceable. I assume collapses on the mule track from the earthquake. When I reach the saddle in Polovnik ridge, I turn right to the ridge, a bit on mule track, a bit directly up, soon reach Veliki vrh. At the top I rest, eat some bread slices with salt and mustard and soon continue along the ridge to Krasji Peak. One hour fast hike to the top, rest, snack, then descent along ridge/marked path. Lower around 1300m I go off-trail right, soon reach a forest mule track or logging trail, which I follow. Lower I pick up hiking path going right and thus paths alternated as I reach village Magozd, then just to the car.
