End of the week or on Monday I plan to ascend Krn via ferrata Silva Korena. Do you have info on weather conditions on the route? Is the path completely dry? I read that the fixed protections are great, but I'm concerned about possible snow patches or scree on the path... Thanks a lot for the help and good luck!

Me too, I plan to go to Krn end of the week but from Kuhinja, we'll see what the weather will be like. Hopefully no snow, but we'll have to dress quite warmly as I saw it's already -5 degrees. Cheers

Well, unfortunately the hut on the summit was closed already on 3.10., although there were quite a few of us on top then, I don't know why, apparently the warden was on strike for quite some time before 3.10. Or maybe it's not worth it, too small earnings? Safe steps.

jprim, do you know that on Krn they have no water supply? Supplies ran out, without water the shelter can't operate!! And that warden would never strike, even though the earnings are indeed (too) small.

I notice that apparently you can't rely on the info found on the PZS page http://www.pzs.si/index.php?stran=Seznam for huts! In the last days there have been several posts here about hut openings that contradict the info on PZS page... Specifically for Gomišček shelter on Krn it says "CLOSED, open in case of nice weather"...if I remember correctly, on 3.10. the weather was really nice...also for the hut on Kokrško sedlo it still says "open", although I just read here that it's already closed...No problem at all, I understand it's closed, but sometimes it's inconvenient, especially if you're going on a tour with kids and counting on a hot meal, especially now when temperatures are quite low. So if you're relying on the hut, better call ahead and check, so there's no bad mood later .

Has anyone been to Krn over the weekend via Silva Korena path? What's the condition on the path?

I haven't been up there, but I know that at least until 12:00 the entire Silva Korena path is in the shade, right in the upper part almost at the exit there might be some snow dust.

And who knows what the conditions are like, across Planina Kuhinja to the top of Krn. Is there any snow

Today a beautiful day via ferrata S.Korena to Krn and down the western path back to Drežnica. The path is really almost all day in shade. Mostly no snow, except some on exposed places, where I recommend surefootedness, as it can be slippery. Weather gave us a treat today, so no snow (on Planina Kuhinja and south side none at all). In the bivouac at Gomišček shelter the traverse stamp is missing, and dress onion style. View to Lignano, Dolomites, Julian Alps and to Savudrija!

did you use any self-protection gear?
|
|
|
|
| jernejscek19. 10. 2009 21:12:40 |
yes, I had a self-protection kit (used it on more exposed spots and ladder), my climbing partner was without it! Recommend, weighing your skills and current conditions!

Where can you get the stamp for the transversal then?

I think in the hut at Planina Kuhinja

On Tuesday on Krn - indeed no Transverzala stamp in the bivouac, only Krn summit stamp. But to go to Planina Kuhinja for the stamp - that's not even nice if you come from and return to Drežnica.

I think it's completely dry. I only drove past today, but it seemed completely snow-free to me, opposite to Kanin mountains.

So we don't mislead people, I checked the ZEVS website. Quote: Snow line dropped to 1800 m in the morning, user from Bovec.

Yesterday morning there was no snow anymore - as seen from the valley.

Finally we reached Krn. We left Kuhinja 20 minutes to 8. At the summit I was 20 to 11, husband half an hour earlier. At the start it looked nice and warm too, at the top fog piled up, a bit windy. It cleared a bit so we saw around. Fog all the way back but ok, it was nice. Best regards.
