What are the conditions on Krn and surroundings after the last snowfall? Is there a lot of snow?

We're planning to go to Krn from Planina Kuhinja on Saturday, interested in how much snow there is? Has it all melted already?

Since some time has passed since the last snowfall it's about snow transformation, so we can say it's old snow. The snowpack is frozen in morning hours, then softens from solar heat and snow becomes wet. If someone wants more precise and esp. "smart" explanation I recommend the handbook Snow, ice, avalanches (P.Šegula) if they go to snowy mountains in winter too, lots of "smart" tips there and no need to rely only on forum which I stress again shouldn't be anyone's sole info source.

Triglavski, thanks for detailed info. I agree, internet shouldn't be the only source. But I prefer a description from someone I trust. I've done this route in summer at least 5 times. I hope for a nice trip.

Today hubby and I were on Krn from Planina Kuhinja. It was warm, little snow, so summer boots were enough for ascent.

Tomorrow I'll 100% go somewhere, but don't know where yet. What do you think about Krn? What are the conditions like in your opinion?

Above 1800 expect quite some new snow, up to half meter in drifts. Due to south wind and warming, snow will be heavy/wet tomorrow. Think due to avalanches in high mountains and unstable snow cover, need to wait for stabilization. More accessible (with snowshoes) less demanding ridges: Pokljuški greben, Fužinske planine, Porezen, Blegoš and Ratitovec, where I'll go tomorrow.

Hmm.. yeah, expected such answer. What about up to that height? 1900m max? From valley no feel how much snow. Fact is all previous snow melted (not for Krn) and new snow as much as fell yesterday.

Well, anyway, my buddy and I decided to go to Krn today. It was super, lots of people too. Snow not as much as it looks from far or from upper pic.

A bit below hut summit quite icy, no harm in crampons on feet, but doable without. Well, met triglavski too (think it was him =))

@triglavski, where did you head then? Over Batognica?

The picture above is a bit strange to me too, but no matter, morning colors were nice today, sadly predicted cloudier day. Conditions all said by maiden, snow no special issues, but predecessors went own way, esp. upper part ignored marked trail, so more or less direct up.
We went down to Krnska škrbina, that part windblown to old snow in places, partly icy, so watch out, then descended central gully where lots of postholing, up definitely advise against. Girls brave, see at home in mountains.
