At the beginning of this month, when there was a full moon, we canceled just because of the newly fallen snow...! Now it should be good, just the question of avalanches above the lake... We'd go past the lake not on it nasmeh

thanks

Of course it's possible along the lake too, where the summer path goes, the upper path is still snowy, the snow is frozen and there's risk of slipping, then you're quickly on or in the lake. Well I assume the ice on the lake will hold at least until May 1st, but everyone should assess if it's safe or not themselves. Higher up everything is covered and there are extensive avalanches like I've never seen on Polje pasture. In the morning the snow would hold a hiker too, later trudging could be very strenuous, otherwise Thursday promises deterioration with snow line around 1900m, but even one clear and cold night does its thing.

Attaching some photos from Sunday's ascent to Krn from Kuhinja pasture. Pleasant conditions and warm weather attracted quite a few visitors...

Are crampons and ice axe needed right now?
like
ben527. 04. 2010 21:18:15
If you're heading out, it's recommended to have crampons and ice axe with you, as snow on clear mornings especially at the top can still be slightly frozen. Later when it warms up, gaiters come more into play, as the snow sinks quite a bit. Regards

ben5, nice pics - it kinda tempted me to go too nasmeh Could you tell me at what altitude the snow roughly starts? Surely no avalanche danger, right? Thanks for info nasmeh

Thanks. Snow starts soon above the Kožljak slope (where the view opens to Krasji vrh and Drežnica), around 1700m, but it thins out slowly, so no avalanche danger. Regards

Today instead of Krn I turned towards Kožljak. It's a forested ridge that acts as an extension of that ridge stretching from Krn southwards.
From Kuhinja pasture (991m) I continued on the standard path to Krn - past Slapnik and Zaslap pastures to the saddle where the mentioned path and the one from Drežnica meet. From the junction I continued left on pathless terrain that is locally quite exposed to Kožljak. Nice views opened on all sides. The western Julian Alps are still well white and their whiteness is pure contrast to the greenery that has spread from the valley up to 2000m in the last month. I returned via pathless terrain under Botognica, past Leskovca pasture. Upon arriving at the parking lot I was literally shocked. When I parked in the morning, my car was one of four, then I counted over 40 pieces of metal. Obviously Krn was heavily besieged today.

Hi everyone!

Does anyone know what the conditions are for ascent to Krn from Kuhinja pasture, is any winter gear needed or can you reach the top without crampons? Also interested if it's possible to sleep in the winter room or is Gomilščkovo shelter already open?
Thanks for replies.

As you can see from my photos, the path from Kuhinja to Krn summit is more or less green. There were still some snow patches on the path on Sunday, especially if heading under the shelter to Krnska škrbina. During the week their extent has probably decreased a lot.

Good day, pd Lisina Matulji, Croatia, Saturday 5.6. from Kluž to Rombon, is there snow and can a larger group reach the summit without problems? What are conditions to Mangart via Slovenian route, is there snow, or is the route passable?
Thanks for help and info.

There is still plenty of snow in the Julian Alps above 2000 m and due to the expected cooling it will persist even more. For high-mountain visits at this time, complete alpinist clothing and gear are needed, including a bivouac sack. More is described on Hribi.net in the current conditions under Igor Z.-Mangart.

From Kluž to Rombon the path is dry, towards the summit some snow patches can be found but they shouldn't cause issues. Mangart is described on TK gora, everything is still under snow, pics also on M&M. The Slovenian path to Mangart has been closed since last August and will remain so until the protections are repaired. Sometimes it's good to check another forum too, like: http://www.pzs.si/index.php?stran=Novice&novica_id=4975

Back to the topic, I was on Krn yesterday, 29.5., via Silva Korena path - a bit above the bivouac you need to cross a snowfield, probably avalanche debris, as the snow is quite hard. Caution needed. No more such difficulties to the summit except small patches. Summit partly dry too, so no winter gear needed. But cooling is coming...

Best to all!

As seen from the top, to about the forest line (ca. 200m above Krn lake - Planina na Polju) fully dry, then snow patches start, turning into firm snow towards the summit. Don't know what that means regarding snow depth and path coverage, but adding picture (from Krn top towards east - Vrh nad Peski) for at least an approximate idea..

Best, Grega
