Hello, I'm wondering if anyone knows how much new snow there is from the lake to the top of Krn and if there's avalanche danger. Before the precipitation I see it was great. Thanks. LP Ludwig

At the lake there's not much, higher up even up to half a meter.

From Planina Kuhinja Danica and I climbed to the pass above Kožljak where we sank into wind-blown dry snow in places. Snow cover depth increases with height but is still modest for December. Base is icy in spots so crampons are recommended. Wind followed us to the top making sure we didn't "overheat". Sun warmed till around 1800m where temp was -3 (saddle -7, Kuhinja -5). Fog on top occasionally cleared by sun. We warmed in winter room and chatted nicely with four other hikers then back to valley. Despite not ideal path conditions we had a nice day.

In summer I already hiked the tour from Dom in Lepena to Krn. I'd like to repeat it in winter conditions. Need some advice: Does Koča pod Krnom have a winter room? Is the path dangerous in winter conditions in any way, what to watch out for?

Koča pod Krnom not only doesn't have a winter room, it doesn't exist at all! In Lepena there's Dom dr. Klementa Juga, at Krn lakes Planinski dom pri Krnskih jezerih and right below Krn summit Gomiščkovo zavetišče na Krnu. Planinski dom pri Krnskih jezerih has a nice winter room in the "annex" while Gomiščkovo zavetišče has a more basic one. Ascent to Krn from all sides is demanding in winter. Summit part usually windblown and icy, risk of slip. Plus south slope in new snow is pure avalanche terrain (north to lakes not much better). Also mostly ski tourers go to Krn in winter, so no foot track maybe. Plus tour length regardless of start and short winter day. Bottom line, need experience and proper gear you know how to use. The path itself isn't dangerous, never hurt anyone. Conditions can be dangerous (ice, wind, avalanches) or us if not up to it or ignore conditions.

The hut has a winter room without beds - just some benches and tables. You can see the entrance on one of my already posted photos. In winter conditions the path from Planina Kuhinja can be dangerous if slope is icy. Full winter gear needed. But usually when high mountain conditions suitable for long it's well tracked. "Steps" carved from start of Krn plate to shelter. Due to steep slope avalanche risk high after snowfall. Similar for approach from Krn lake. Good luck and stay safe.

By dangerous path I meant conditions on path (ice, avalanches). We'd like to do 2-day tour without rushing but for enjoyment. So overnight somewhere. So below Krn winter room is more "sparse". At Krn lakes wouldn't sleep cuz then already close to home in Lepena. This year we did Grintovec so looking for new similar challenges. If anyone has suggestion, grateful.

turbo and ksena, my friends, you wrote well, I didn't get a turn. But first winter when dedicated PZS NG hikers fixed that vestibule I overnighted there once. Then still cushions on benches and some blankets, later all removed???, like years ago the stove from bivouac below Krn lake. Anyway on whole path from lakes most tricky is Krn notch (between Batognica and Krn), once scratched halfway on skis got swept back had to take skis off pickaxe in hand. But once on May 1 nicely cut it on skis whole slope avalanched. When younger first day from Lepena to lakes and Lanževica napped hour then down to Anica hut under Bogatin for beer or to Dom na Komni when Franc was there, second day to Veliki Bogatin then after Lepomoče skied to lakes, jumped to Krn, skied back to lake and Lepena or where snow was usually to half or rest spot.

Tol, you can come from Savica over Komna and Bogatinsko sedlo, then you'll be glad when you reach the bivouac at Krn Lake and next day back won't be short either.

Tol, you can start at Koča na planini Kuhinja hut. This hut should be open on weekends and holidays. Wait for good conditions and "gas pa dolge". If it's true the hut will be open as written on PZS, you can call the warden by phone about conditions! Good luck!

Cloudy weather and peaks in fog above 1650 m didn't promise best conditions for ascent to Krn summit, but nevertheless we head to the top from planina Kuhinja. Snow starts around 1250 m, on Kožljak it's already over half a meter. Snow sinks to knees, higher even more, trampling very strenuous, so we take turns. Above 1700 m fog is quite thick, visibility about 15m. At summit after 3:10 h ascent, we refuel, sign the book and descend the same way. On descent fog is less thick, at times sun breaks through clouds. Yesterday there were six of us at the top. Despite zero view, yesterday's ascent to Krn was unique.

Hello! I'm interested in conditions for Krn from Lepena, if anyone has been around there recently. Thanks in advance for replies and lots of pleasant, especially safe, mountain pleasures to all! Mateja

This morning I was at planina Kuhinja, so I can only give information from a "bird's eye" perspective. It looks still pretty waterlogged as far as the eye reaches towards Lepena. Best with skis or snowshoes - and don't forget crampons and ice axe. regards

Hi! I'm curious how it is at the lake, is it badly flooded, or are there any problems to pass by to planina na polju? Regards Zoran

Given the considerable thaw that's persistently reaching the heights, I don't recommend any further free passages over the lake. The expert Igor, who was there, will tell more.
