On Saturday a cooling hike on Snežnik from Sviščaki, then circular back to Mašun along the ridge towards Little Snežnik. The path then branches back to Sviščaki and past Grda jama back to the start. It was great, temperatures perfect, unfortunately no views, but I really like the path, especially the ridge path from the top.

Is there any snow up there yet? I know the next days promise a lot, but I'm curious if there's any base.

Today Janez, Peter and I went from Sviščaki to Big Snežnik on skis. Up to the turning point the path was in light snowfall, with individual drifts from 5 to almost 50 cm of wind-blown snow along the path, which posed no problems for the ascent. From the turning point on, Snežnik showed true winter conditions, strong wind (the caretaker said wind chill on top -40°C), visibility sometimes cca 100 m, sometimes 5 meters. Thank God, Draga Karolina shelter was open today, where we warmed up with hot tea. The descent to the turning point was orientationally quite demanding, from there to Sviščaki the descent was real pleasure for me. The path is frozen, so no problems for hikers. Track is made. I was also there yesterday on Snežnik, but only to the turning point. At Sviščaki temp at 1600 was -8.7°C at turning point 2 hours earlier -10.7°C, wind up to 55km/h before I fled, gusts much stronger, wind chill -21.1°C

Yes, conditions were very changeable. Whoever was up there today has, I think, well tasted the omnipotence of Big Snežnik. LP Andrej

Afriški Janez, is there some formula for calculating wind chill. If you have some data or link to it, I'd appreciate it. LP Andrej

Has anyone gone up there this year over Gašperjev hrib, up to where is the road plowed?

Is the road to Sviščaki drivable with winter tires, or are chains needed (which I don't have). LP.

Yesterday night ascent from Leskova dolina (10.01.2009). Too beautiful to describe. Full moon!!! Path was without tracks, last ascent not recommended without crampons because frozen, below postholing... ascent took 4h, descent 2h with good fitness. Nice winter greeting!

We also climbed to the top yesterday during the day (from Sviščaki), where a wonderful view awaited us. You can get to the top without crampons, but for going down I can't imagine walking safely enough without them, so I warmly recommend them to everyone. In the hut over the weekend a smiling caretaker awaits you with tea and blueberries, the cook however until the time we were up there wasn't yet, so have a piece of chocolate in your backpack . Besides the sunshine and snowy idyll the full moon added the "dot on the i" Enjoy, we did yesterday!

Ideal for winter tours and ski touring. Snow is frozen so crampons are highly recommended.

wondering if it's very dangerous to go to snežnik, are crampons enough?

Yesterday it was icy on Snežnik - up to the ridge it was safely passable even without winter gear. The top meters below the hut are icy and dangerous - due to strong bora and icy terrain crampons were a mandatory part of gear for safe ascent (most Snežnik visitors had no gear and turned back below summit, some risked it, with ice axe and crampons it's safe). Otherwise, early in the morning below Snežnik summit three hikers slipped - rescue action! Ice axe is always welcome if using crampons. If you trip with crampons or wind flips you (felt like it could blow even harder up there and then...) you need ice axe, otherwise after slip you fly those 200 vertical meters down.
