I don't know about Snežnik, but during the holidays we were on the neighboring Croatian Snježnik. Everything was dry, just some snow patches around the summit. All winter gear would be unnecessary. I assume not much has changed since then.

michael66, why not call the hut at Sviščaki by phone and ask for information about road passability? You'd get first-hand info, the rest is mostly hearsay, go look yourself and you'll see how it is...

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I've always been met by a sign on this road in the cold half of the year that the road isn't maintained in winter. I somehow doubt it'd be any different with this year's snow amount in these parts.

I was a bit doubtful too. But when I drove there, the doubts vanished, because the road is cleared and snow-free all the way to the parking lot at Sviščaki. Further on the path on weekends there's snow of course, but the path is compacted by machine and gritted, there was no ice anywhere, as I remember from years ago.

Darinka, I don't want to contradict you. You drove from Ilirska Bistrica to Sviščaki and not from Kozarišča to Mašun and you haven't even seen Kozarišča and Loške doline and Mašun from afar. The road from Ilirska Bistrica to Sviščaki is regularly cleared and gritted from Kozarišča, which are in Loška dolina, to Mašun no.
It's also not cleared from Mašun to Sviščaki but from Koritnice to Mašun. So Darinka, in these cases it's better to take a break a bit, because the area of Snežnik forests is something quite different from the roads around your home Hrusevica near Stanjel...

I wrote where I drove. But others said the other paths aren't cleared anyway. Which is understandable. This road to Sviščaki is a state road and arranged in recent years. I rarely go to these parts. Years ago I missed the way back and drove through that potholed road through Leskova dolina and came out somewhere at Uncu.

Yes Darinka, it was written before that you drove through Knezak to Sviščaki because it's four kilometers shorter than via Ribnica and not from Kozarišča.

These two photos are from today. Andrej sent them to me, who was on Snežnik today. Four adult bears crossed the road and also two larger cubs. No way, not nice to meet them.

There are plenty of them everywhere. Last Saturday I saw one below the summit of Škrilje above Rakek. Luckily it ran away. And once before I met one in Kočevsko.

We were on Veliki Snežnik on Saturday 18.3. from Leskova dolina. The path from there is mostly without snow, it starts around 1,200 m.a.s.l. but doesn't pose bigger problems. We didn't use even small crampons since snow was hard in the morning, in the afternoon when returning via hunting path it softened slightly and sank, so we used gaiters for drier shoes. Weather was nice, bit of wind on top and quite a few visitors also from our side (Kozarišče-Leskova dolina) and not only from Sviščaki direction. Good luck ... Slavko&Mirjam
