Mangart

Probably I'd go to the Himalayas if it stood in front of the house.
Super and good luck further!

Hi Igor

Nice tour! Where exactly did you go? Did you stick 100% to the Italian path or (as you wrote) do you have to turn off from the path direction and know the snow passages?

I answered Bojan via PM, thanks to the rest. Mangart in good winter conditions isn't some special feat, sadly it's still some kind of death mountain, over 30 already ended up there. I needed 5 hours up and down, with skis it goes faster of course.

"Of course my ascent can't be compared to some Viševnik, but still."
That's what you wrote about the ascent to Mangart on the Gora Touring Ski Club.
But I'm still curious what was meant by that. I'm just a woman....
Otherwise full respect, good feat.

Yes, the elevation difference and length and difficulty of the tour are nowhere near comparable to a "puppy" like Viševnik... Viševnik in winter is a pilgrimage path, everyone rushes up, while only few come to Mangart, since it requires certain experience, assessing the conditions, good orientation and much more. To be clear, ALL hills require certain knowledge and gear. But one thing is to get from RP to Viševnik, something completely different to Mangart, not mentioning the gully from Koritnica and J wall of Mangart. Then comes criticism!

Already the elevation meters alone on the ascent from Mangart Plateau to the summit are almost exactly twice as many as to Viševnik from Rudno Polje.
The distance despite the winter shorter path is also quite large already to the saddle, let alone to the summit. On the summit ascent there were surely cornices, which must be bypassed (right path) or broken if small. This ascent is in my opinion much more demanding than picking on hard compact snow somewhere in easier couloirs.
If I said anything wrong let Igor correct or complete me.

Samoa has already got the answer, otherwise just current inspiration regarding the predecessor who described extreme conditions on Viševnik on TKG (icy). I didn't understand it as criticism, so any polemic is unnecessary. There are quite a few of you here who would manage Mangart easier than me, lp

Igor, hello! I have one question for you, nowhere do I see Špik in winter? But I'd like to be on the top soon, considering that you're our Julian angel, you surely have some news from that corner too? HWALLA, in advance, and hope we meet again soon up there. LP

Igor, I'm also interested in passages to Mangart and probably someone else, if it's not a bother I'll be glad if you can share them with the rest of us too.
It would also be interesting to hear something about Špik.
Thanks for the answer!

I'm not a fan of describing step by step, whoever masters the knowledge of the summer route and handles walking in winter conditions will also find safe passages, otherwise you can follow the track if the wind hasn't blown it away. Once I already wrote somewhere that chamois and dippers don't bring me data on conditions either, so sometimes you just have to go on the route and check. Of course, it's possible to predict conditions based on constant monitoring, but on site something can surprise you, then you can always turn back if you're not ramming your head through the wall, which some unfortunately do.

Sometimes you don't tell someone what you know for several reasons; either because you don't want someone to go after your successes and share it effortlessly with you (read undeserved), or secondly (I believe in Igor's case), so that someone doesn't unnecessarily rush into trouble (consequently more rescue actions due to excessive adventurism). Some just can't judge what is achievable for them and what not. I just don't go in winter because I'm not up to it, and it gets cold on top of that. So in summer I do about 15-17 tours in the high mountains - that's quite enough for me and I'm satisfied with that. And best regards nasmeh

Igor thanks for the reply. If I'm honest you're right, but you all forget that we from the flattest part of SLO need at least 3 to 4 hours to the starting point. Even though I follow weather reports both SLO and IT they are sometimes, mildly put, way off. Not everyone has the luck to be at the starting point in max one hour but that's how it is. My desire to succeed in reaching the summit is not so great and boundless that I wouldn't know to turn back upon detecting danger even if I'm right below the summit. I know how to assess and respect these things in the mountains. So I don't expose myself and others, if they are with me. I have quite some experience in the mountains but of course far from you Igor.

To you just that I am a lover of whiteness and peace therefore the mountains are by far the most beautiful for me in winter.

How Mangart looks these days was already described by Igor Z., that's why we also headed up there.
From the first tunnel all the way to the entry into the "Italian route" we were on skis. Igor's tracks were still clearly visible and the snow conditions were similar. In the summit area there was some newly drifted snow. Despite the forecast of strong wind, we had a surprisingly calm day.

Pohodnik yes, I agree with you. I also know how to turn back at the start of the tour or right below the summit, sometimes even in bed when the alarm wakes me and I'm not in the right mood, despite the backpack at the door. Mountains are something beautiful.
But I also agree with Igor and give him right. Here data is exchanged and read by people of different experiences, opinions and ideas. And yes, as it's easy to ask it's harder to answer, because you don't know to whom the info reaches (my mistake). But I'm glad there's a forum where a lot can be discussed.
SAFE STEPS TO ALL

For details on conditions, if I know them, I'm always available via PMs, but sadly some don't know what ZS means. Maybe best not to post anymore as it always turns into a philosophical debate unrelated to the main topic.

Maybe it is really the smartest that way, so that some guides also learn to take a guidebook or other literature in hand and browse other internet sites. Too many people here are already quite spoiled and expect conditions to be served to them on a platter.

Interesting what a fuss from one simple suggestion and wish that other mortals learn more about current conditions. I thanked Igor with understanding for the explanation, but ego doesn't let some rest without pontificating. But that's how it is, today was not the most suitable day for the mountains but it was suitable for the computer.
S56 look, I hope you can still hike in the mountains for a long time, just don't underestimate and don't send us Prekmurje people with backpacks into nature because we can't go to the mountains; as you wrote. Maybe someday you'll be glad if you can even stroll in nature. And I don't wish you anything bad with this, just no need to insult with such statements!
