Igor, I warned about the torn cable (clamp) on 12.9. But from your pic I feel the "tear" has grown since then. I think it's close to the spot where the Austrian flew to her death.

Also Janez, Peter and I went to Mangart starting at Mangart lakes via "Via Italiana" and then Slovenian route. In the lower part to bivouac the rock was wet from shade and many streamlets running on the path; careful steps needed. The rock in the ferrata was dry, path excellently secured (praise to all responsible). Ascent on ferrata passed too quickly, so we continued to summit on Slovenian path. Path excellently secured (again praise to locals). Descent on Italian path, then past bivouac to valley. LP Andrej

Hello!

Please for information, what are the conditions on Mangart, is there snow or not? I am going this Sunday, specifically from Mangart saddle up the Slovenian and down the Italian.

Mangart is already in fog for a few days, so it is not possible to see regarding snow. I assume there is some in the Slovenian gully, because the sun no longer shines into it, and likewise on the north Italian side, but it has accumulated quite a bit in these days, I conclude from what I saw on Triglav.

Hi,
I was on Mangart (via the Slovenian route) on Saturday, snow (10-15cm) starts there from 2400m onwards. There's also some ice, so precise steps and good gear are needed. The path is otherwise super secured. The Italian route also has some (only at the top) snow, but no issues...
Good lucknasmeh

Anyway same old story again, but..... Almost in the dark I start hiking from Mangartska Planina. Already after good 20 minutes I'm above the fog blanket and a nice day dawns. I walk partly on marked path, partly on the road to Mangart saddle. Not much snow, frozen snow patches start before the last tunnel, pass the ruins of old Czech hut, and to the saddle. Under MRM I put on crampons, helmet on head, under first cables on Italian path also ice axe in hand. Snow is hard frozen and holds great, like real mid-winter, so ascent is real pleasure. After crossing north side I reach sun, which is almost too hot for this time, snow softens slightly and soon at the top. Valleys in fog, hills and mountains like islands amid misty veils. Wind from SW, so descend a bit lower, sit a while. Looking towards Triglav and somewhat sorry I didn't head that way. Via radio call Kredarica where Janko answers, says only one came from valley, such nice day. Slowly back to saddle, meet Austrian obviously without proper gear, soon turns back too or he'd get into serious trouble. At hut stack the scattered wood, on mobile get message about action on Kriški podi, unfortunately too far, later learn it was slip, injured picked up by helicopter. Follows descent into fog and back to planina. Pity, as weather worsens again, but such good conditions in mountains. Gear like crampons, ice axe and helmet mandatory for high mountains and any debate yes or no is pointless.
promises a nice day1

You've proved again that you're the top on this forum. I envy you a bit. The best pic for me is the penultimate one under Lipnik theme. That's it.

A couple of days ago we skied at the ski resort on Sv. Višarje and had a super view, including the Western Julian Alps:

Actually, in the morning I didn't even know where to go. The weather was a bit shaky, so I said to myself I'd go check how the high mountains look after the last wind. And so I jumped onto Mangart. I started at the pasture on skis along my variant past the tunnels, old snow frozen, over it a few cm of dry snow. Higher, but still below Mangart saddle, it was mostly windblown to hard, locally icy old snow. With skins there were no special problems. Over Plazje two Italians came who had the same goal. On skis through locally hard, locally soft couloir and windblown snow we broke through under the first cables of the Italian route, then I along the Italian path to the summit, the Italians on the winter variant, which had recently also been skied. At the summit we met again, so I got to know two more mates from Neveja, namely Roberto and Federica. The weather was more or less cloudy, from SW a foggy mass was rolling in and it looks like there will be a worsening tomorrow, but it was surprisingly calm, virtually windless. Descent to the skis without any issues, skiing wasn't anything special either. But anyway, I didn't expect anything special. Hikers would have big problems with wading through snow in places, conditions will soon be completely different anyway. But I noticed that most who were there over the weekend in the direction of the saddle ended their tour soon after the "big gully" still before the last tunnel, obviously they don't know the winter passages. For the ascent to winter Mangart, good knowledge of winter passages, experience and proper gear are needed.
