I'd like to point out that the snowfield to cross on the Italian route (second-last picture from MANGART) is still very large. Crossing without proper gear (crampons, ice axe) is very dangerous, as the slope is steep with a drop below (about 100m to cross). We turned back due to slippery snow - the mountain will wait.

Good luck!

I would join the previous warning about snowfields, even if it is just a few steps from them, one slip can be fatal: so be careful, don't play heroes and heroics, use ice axes and crampons; if you don't have them with you, better turn back, the mountain will wait, an opportunity for a repeat ascent will also be found. Safe step and happy return to the valley.

Mangart today...from Mangart saddle up Slovenian route and Italian down...conditions; Slovenian is dry and the patch below summit can be bypassed, still crumbly so don't forget helmetwinking...Italian has some three snowfields, for the longest used ice axe, individual choice. Otherwise nice sunny very panoramic and veeery windy day.

Yesterday on Mangart. It took almost too long to get to the starting point. At the parking lot it was blowing like lightning, so we had to get dressed, start at 9.30 at the saddle and up the Slovenian route (it took us 1:45 hours). The path bp, pulls uphill so much that it's not normal. Views phenomenal..... Jalovec, Ponce like on the palm of the hand, in the distance Škrlatica and Triglav tower, Krn put on a shy cap, Kanin too, only Montaž persisted without. After one and a half hours of enjoying in the lee, descent via the Italian route, need to cross 2 snowfields (upper one, right after the junction to Kotovo sedlo), the longest about 50 m (goes without crampons and carefully). Last-lower one right after the end of the cables about 20m also passable with caution no problem. Descent took 1 hour. In Log earned green drink and something to eat and over Vršič home.

PS: Given that I've been on the forum for some years, after careful consideration the decision prevailed to upload photos for the first time.nasmeh

Nice greeting. I'm interested if there is still any snowfield on the Italian route to Mangart and how it is with the protections.

Hello. For some time I've wanted to go from Laghi di Fusine to Mangart (Via Italiana). Since I recently saw on Hribi.net somewhere that this path is closed again. Wondering if anyone knows if it's open, or where I could check. Thanks for your answers.
Regards.

for atomsic; Italian via ferrata still closed, the chief of FJK mountain guides says they'll repair it asap (but date unknown); alternatively you can go on normal path CAI 517 via Bivacco Nogara to Sella Mangart then a bit along and on Slovenian side normal path to summit or I recommend from upper Belopeško lake path 516 over Klanška škrbina (that was old historic route to Mangart ascent from lakes), check Tabacco map 019.

Yesterday I was on Mangart. Up the Slovenian still in the sun, down the Italian already in fog. It blew really nasty, I felt sorry for some kids they dragged up in shorts. Well, I looked it up and saw that I was exactly 32 years ago (17.07.1979) first time on Triglav. Oh those years and my brains, or not hehe. Regards.

Sorry Mangrt and kaveljc, real mistake, comment is for the back pic, you know, late hour, irregular student food, and parrot puked. Enka, snowfield on Italian is quite short(10m) and widely trodden, kids walked it too. Little caution and no problem at all. L.p.

I'd like to do the Slovenian via ferrata tomorrow morning, starting from Trieste and likely starting at 9.00....anyone know the forecast in the area???

Sorry for my bad Slovenian. What are conditions tomorrow for Slovenian ferrata on Mangart?
