Today I did a nice ascent to Mangart, description at: www.turni-klub-gora.si

on Mangrtska planina half a meter of snow and that in a winter that doesn't exist

behind the bend the sun greets me, like a sweetheart who gives a kiss

Mangrt in winter is a special experience, not given to everyone.

no problem getting up, the problem is catching the moment of the golden line in the sky

winter route is not for those who drag themselves through couloirs on a rope in winter

there about 120 times I stood by the cross, and you?

White path, but not in spring, in the midst of hard winter.

Mangrtska planina, remote, yet so close and exceedingly beautiful in winter.

Been to Mangart several times, never direct from valley...Italian and Slovenian routes done a few times already....never winter ascent to Mangart though.

So winter ascent/route: road to saddle then Italian to summit and descent same way? Does that hold or not...any corrections, additions, detours, shortcuts velik nasmeh

maybe someone has a GPS track of winter ascent?

Mangart in winter:

In the direction of the Italian route (airy) or via the "winter or Igor's" variant.

Read Igor's above post and some older one of his on ascent to Mangart.

Crossing the north slopes of Mangart, 01.02.2011.

Crossing the south slopes of the mountain is not easy either.

You can go to Mangart also from Belopeška Lakes via Plaz (which is also suitable for ski touring) to Mangart Saddle and onwards to Mangart.

Igor, crazy dude, oh I've been up there kinda your achievement divided by 10, meaning some 10 or max. 12 times (on no two-thousander so many times, this one's just my favorite! velik nasmeh

Today I walked and checked the road to Mangart hut. The road is bare to the first tunnel. From the last tunnel (below the hut) the path is snowy - for safe crossing I needed an ice axe.

1.30 hours, you can go on the marked path, no need to go much on the road.

on Tuesday we were at Mangart, started from Belopeški lakes, nice 2 couloirs (516 start), from saddle onwards careful crossing, you have good track from us, if you go, early morning hurry, because afternoon thaw
cheers (5 hours walking) - and don't drive up by car to the tunnel, walk to the lakes, then up - waste of day to drive up there)

crossing kr dangerous (similar to Brani, if not worse)

from the starting point at Belopeška lakes - we went via the right gully

Mangart today, classic up Slovenian side and down Italian side.
Start from Planina Mangart, through forest to Gorenji stan. Here cross the road and back to forest on shortcut to last tunnel. Few hundred meters before tunnel climb past old hut to saddle. To Slovenian route some snow patches, with caution no crampons needed. Before entry put on crampons, axes in hands and go. First third snow loose covered with crust that breaks. Further proper-firm. Descent nothing special, just traverse not firm.
Recommend early descent as snow softens quickly and dangerous for slip - even on crampons.

Before the summit a bit more to the left.

The sun has come out after breakfast too.

Get up early, drive to first tunnel and arrive at summit before sun.
Lots of snow still, starts at little Mangart. To traverse sinks deep. Towards top poorly bonded with old. Another week or two conditions nicer.
Way back fix sign too so no one goes astray velik nasmeh
