Mangart

Igor thanks for the reply. It seems to me that through those grasses and scree it would be relatively possible to get up there. Am I wrong?

Has anyone been to Mangart after the snowfall? Is the road passable to the saddle? Thanks for the reply. Regards

Today was on Mangart...road passable to the top of the saddle, despite some smaller snowdrifts. Ascent via Slovenian route was quite adrenalizing, in places hard snow on the path, first gully iced over, then bare path where crampons weren't exactly the most practical, so there was some "putting on and taking off". From the top again endless views and no wind at all, so I stayed up there quite a while. Descent via Italian side, which starts sunny with fairly soft snow, runs over rocks, some icy bases appear and you have to watch for slips, on shady side snow is hard, on the traverse one part of the fixed rope under snow, last snow patch at end of the rope before scree, lower you can avoid it. Given the described path I won't "nag" about mandatory winter gear - it's obvious, I hope. Today met two hikers at summit and four when already at saddle on mulled wine, but all turned back at fixed ropes on Italian route.
Survived a wonderful day, with slightly accelerated pulse on ascentnasmeh

Dry to the viewpoint platform, then on Italian snow which is frozen, higher on the sunny side slightly softened. Crampons, ice axe, helmet and gaiters mandatory. I don't recommend the Slovenian one as it has too little snow, on the winter one old tracks were visible. On return at the first chain I met three well-equipped German-speaking mountaineers, but only for the summer ascent, so they turned back without crampons and ice axes.

On Tuesday, 14.11.2011, I climbed Mangart via the Italian route from Mangart Saddle. The road is passable to the last tunnel. Mostly dry to the split of slo and it routes, from there on properly wintry. Snow windblown in places.

Today with Flokam on Mangrt. From Belopeške via Plazje and ita. path to top, descended to Noggaro and through Mirnjak back to Belopeška lakes. Through Plazje no need crampons, somewhere at junction to Slo. route better put them on. For walking totally cool, hard trampled...

Nice photos!
Yes, beautiful and mighty mountain, just too much and often besieged wrong way... From this view most similar to Triglav. If these two mountains took that "burden" off shoulders... oh how nice, but enough debated already...nasmeh

Super! I see I'm not the only one who likes waiting for sunsets (and sometimes sunrises too, if I'm not too lazy big grin)

Sunrises are the best, although others sometimes think you're crazy for getting up so earlysmileNothing better than hiking with a headlamp, in peace and returning when others are just changing shoes at the parking lotsmile haha
