Snow cover starts below MRM, wet snow, sinking in bad boots, but not everywhere, from first Italian cables to traverse piercing ice crust, further icy-snowy winter decor.
That was yesterday, tomorrow it will be different again depending on the weather.

At saddle all bare to first cables. Today's approach winter route left variant and along ridge to summit. Snow compacted and icy only below summit, where grip most important breaks through under it powder. Descent ridge and at traverse marked back to saddle and valley.

Yesterday (1.1.2017) on Mangart. Road normally drivable to the last tunnel, yes even further, but behind the tunnel half the road is under snow, with a slightly higher car it goes without problems. Ascent and descent via the Italian route. Snow hard, all winter gear and caution needed. Day was very nice, only a bit windy on the top

Today we set off to Mangart very early. Thermometer already showed -18°C at the border crossing at five. Snow starts still at the first fixed cables. Approach via winter route, Italian variant. We also tried the usual winter one, but there's little ice on the rock, and at times the blows sound hollow, so after a few meters of climbing we turned back and went around. On wind-exposed spots it was pretty cold, but with proper clothing it goes without major issues. Otherwise snow conditions ideal, real pleasure in climbing. Descent via Italian.
And... Not to forget... Recommended crampons and ice axe

I somehow pushed through to the saddle on skis, further on the conditions are like last year, hard, frozen, but not bad at all.

Today I went along the road towards the hut at Mangart saddle. The road is snowy from the junction at the bridge over Predilnica. To the first tunnel it's partially plowed, leveled and hard (not icy) and suitable for sledding. Further on there's more and more snow. Since it's soft, walking without skis or snowshoes is difficult. In the tunnels need to be careful, as it's quite icy.

I was "cutting" the bends because I was in a hurry to the top, so we missed each other .
From saddle to top good conditions, skiing wasn't bad either.

With skis today over Mesnovka past the old hut to the first fixed cables on the Italian route. Here I put on crampons and through the chimney straight to the summit. Return along the ridge and down the north gully back to the skis. From there I skied on excellent base under Rdeča skala through the tunnel and along the road back to the valley.

Some of today's pics from Mangart; conditions for walkers are not the best, as we postholed almost all the time. But the views themselves, the panoramas give you always new and new strength, so we/I got to the valley in better mood than in the morning.

Mangart (19.03.17)
I expected a bit less sinking over Plazje, but somehow it went anyway. A bit above the saddle I put on crampons and all needed. I chose directly through the narrow gully; the predecessor with whom we greeted from a distance did the same. Could be that Mangart skier. The jump is now just barely filled. Not much longer. Exit a bit more left of the cross. Descent on the "normal" route, which isn't easy at all. At every step on the traverse you must hit the crampons because of icing. Some more skiers were there. To the valley at the lakes went a bit faster.

I think I met Mangrt when he was descending, we missed you, probably you were already descending via Plazje.

Nice tour done (redbull and ljubitelj gora). LG I greeted you when you rushed along the road and seemed very bad-tempered to me. Redbull we didn't wave as I was at the car by ten. The cross on top has an honorary place like Aljaž's tower and isn't for self-admiration.(pic 8)
