Conditions from 10.7. - The Slovenian route is snow-free except for some completely non-problematic patches. The Italian route crosses two snowfields. In the ascent direction, the first snowfield is short but steep (I saw people who turned back here and went back), the second snowfield right after is a bit longer but flatter. The snow mid-day was super trodden and processed so the risk of slipping is not great, but caution is still needed especially at the first snowfield. Before the first snowfield, turn off the marked path a few meters lower (visible by the scree as everyone goes there), since higher where the path runs it is under snow for longer. If descending the Italian route, at the junction Koča or Kotovo sedlo, go a few meters lower towards Kotovo sedlo then turn left onto the snowfield, where the trodden path over the snowfield is also visible.

On Saturday with my partner I planned to go over Via Italiana. The closed road already crossed our plans. We decided for plan B. Meaning change clothes, change shoes then in running gear, partly on the road partly on the footpath to the saddle then ahead on the Italian to the top. On top quite a few people. It was also quite cold, regarding temperatures in the valley. At that time it was still clear. For the return from the saddle to the car at the bridge we ran on the road. Right at the car the first drops appeared, which were soon followed by heavy rain. We made it excellently, I think though that not so few got wet on Saturday. Accumulated ca 25 km and a bit more than 1500 elevation gain. Beer and a bit later two rounds of ice cream fully restored our energy

Ski season opening. Up through the chimney and directly to the top. Return right and skiing on the Italian side all the way to the ramp with five stops where it was necessary to unclip the skis.

With skis you get quite quickly to the saddle. Here the troubles start. Under little Mangart all the way to the first Italian cable, pure slop with sharp crust. To the top then mixed from ice patches to soft snow. Skiing so-so as snow not yet sufficiently processed.

Yesterday excellent weather conditions on Mangart, not too hot, not too cold.
Set off from Strmec on the forest path that crosses the road several times. Before the last tunnel straight up to the last road bend at the saddle. From the bend direct to the gully via normale above which then turn back into the winter route. Snow still breaks through in places.
In the first part of the winter route the gully is filled but the snow is soft, left jump in the winter route is dry.
The route already has nice steps all the way to the top. Returned the same way because via normale looked untouched. (traverse above S wall)

That "via normale" in winter is rather more demanding than this winter route

HA HA, via normale is nothing else but the marked Italian path to Mangart. This access or descent with skis in winter is the easiest, danger only the traverse due to slip or slab.
