Ojstrica

In case you heard the words "weather forecast" at least once this week and listened to the forecast content, you wouldn't doubt any change in the next two (2) days. Enjoy up there and post fresh info on Friday evening.
Maybe useful to someone for Saturday's trip.wink.

To avoid too much dry philosophizing and empty talk, I gladly report the mountain conditions on 18.12.2015. wink

Yesterday start at Podvežak pasture (slightly below the hut, which you can actually drive to where the road ends). Up right along the eastern ridge to Ojstrica and then down the western past Kocbek hut.

Ascent (eastern variant) frequently encounters snow, which is quite softened and crampons weren't needed even once (had them in backpack, no mistake). Maybe depends on boot sole condition, but didn't slip at all for me. In upper part (higher than Mala Ojstrica) need to cross some snow patches, so caution definitely not amiss.

Descent (western variant, direction Škarije and Planjava) past Korošica pasture. This way is much drier, literally up to ca. 2000m alt. (from summit here), can bypass all snow patches if no snow contact wanted. Only from ca. 2000 to Kocbek hut snow patches start, occasionally requiring some caution and skill, but no crampons needed.

My advice: choose western descent for way down.

SAFE TRAILS TO HIKERS!

On Wednesday start at Razpotje (thanks to Jamnik hut caretaker for ride at Solčava). Road somewhat icy, but path dry to Jama. From there mostly snowy to top of Škarije. It was possible to walk nicely the whole section without crampons/ice axe. From Škarije to Ojstrica path mostly dry with few exceptions, also descent to Korošica. From there continued to Srebrno sedlo direct to Kamniško sedlo. Though snow in shady parts, no crampons needed here. Secured section directly before Kamniško sedlo completely in snow. Descent without ice axe and crampons would be dangerous.

Today on Kopinškova path I lost a crampon (Petzl Sarken). It was in section somewhat before/under last fixed ropes, by altimeter 2070m.
If someone finds it by chance I'll be very grateful.

Conditions up to 'incident' were good. From Jama to Škrbina a bit icy, higher sunny slopes dry. Snow patches quite hard in morning, some ice in shady parts.
The eastern slopes are clear1

What was the continuation like without crampon?

Continuation? After 10 minutes of digging and searching we turned back and (carefully) descended the same path.

Two questions

1. Was the former bivouac under Ojstrica somewhere between the exit from the forest to the scree and Rjavički vrh?

2. On some maps another path to Ojstrica from Klemenče jame is marked. It would be somewhere between Kopinškova path and the one via Rjavičko sedlo and Škarij. It branches off from the path via Škarij somewhere before Rjavičko sedlo, joins Kopinškova path just below the last cable before the summit.

Thanks!

Bivouac under Ojstrica was right under Ojstrica wall, on vegetated hillock.
From description of another path it could be just Debelak alpine route in upper part. lp

Yesterday I did tour K. Bela - Korošica - Ojstrica - Lučka baba - Planjava - Kamniško sedlo. Conditions OK, but need to know path well, otherwise quick orientation issues. Footprints partly there, wind blows them away elsewhere. Huge trouble from Srebrno sedlo to Planjava summit, wind making drifts and hard wading, plus gale gusts up to 100km/h. Photos all from Ojstrica or path to Ojstrica. smile

You're good to have done all that in these conditions. I've walked it twice already, but always in summer. Ojstrica is anyway my fave mountain in Kamnik Alps. Bravo! big grin

Thursday-21.4
Great weather, above all unique conditions for ascent on Kopinškova. Descent over Škarje. Lots of snow so only question when or if at all it will melt on path over Škarje.

On Friday 22.4.16 I headed to Ojstrica via Škarje. Conditions super…as redbull already mentioned…
I had a super companion, legendary Benčanasmeh.
