I know conditions changed today, but at least data for comparison. We celebrated New Year's Eve in the winter room at the hut, no one before or after us, so we broke all new trail in untouched terrain. Path over Komarča nicely passable, more snow only below and then from Lopučnica valley onwards (up to half a meter). Sun and no wind held the whole Sunday, snow firmed up quickly. On leaving someone came after us and broke trail further to Prehodavci. Our group dashed to Štapce, snow just right firm and thin, no crampons needed. Summit real summer, long way to valley ahead. First people met on lower Ovčarija, where two skiers gave up. Further no more trail-breaking needed, past the lake (already in shade) to Vogar, then on icy scree, I think summer path, down. Three were too fast and walked straight to Srednja vas to check if Ema is open. Meanwhile the buddy who didn't freeze with us drove the drivers to the cars, we managed to snag a table in packed Ema. That's how we left.

On 8.2. we went with my colleague from Savica over Komarča along the Triglav Lakes valley. The aim was to conquer Kanjavec, but due to lots of snow in the valley we advanced slowly. Over Komarča there is little snow, but enough to make it slippery on the path. In Lopučniška valley breaking trail on the old track begins. Strong sinking starts only a little before the double lake. There is lots of wind-packed snow in the valley, mostly sinking to knees or over, elsewhere blown clean. In five and a half hours we reached a bit beyond Ledvička, so we decided to return. Anyway, I think conditions are not exactly ideal. Due to wind-packed snow you can easily trigger something. Nevertheless, we used the nice day.

End of this week I'm heading to the Julijce, more precisely the route Bohinjska Planina - Triglav Lakes Valley - Komna. I wonder if anyone can advise whether to take snowshoes or if the paths are already firm, trodden, trampled?? Looking at photos of trips from last week, I can't decide. Thanks for the info! Best, g.

Someone else will tell you about the conditions, I'd just suggest that if possible post the same question in at least three different threads.

nurmaln, thanks, that's exactly what I did. same question in three different threads related to this area. I assume I'm not the only one interested in it. g.

g. in these conditions (everything snowed in) I advise against going to the seven lakes. Two weeks ago there was no trodden path in the valley, we didn't meet anyone either. Besides, avalanche danger shouldn't be underestimated.

What about accessibility... how far can you drive with a car without problems..

The road is passable without chains, I think you shouldn't have problems. It's warmed up a bit, so snow is melting quickly.

Snowshoe touring, or whatever this sport is called? Anyway, the snowshoes have been gathering dust at home since last year, time to try how they work. The hike from Planina Blato to Koča na Triglavskih jezerih or to the Seven Lakes seems like a good choice. And it was. Learned a lot: from walking a bit wider to realizing that sometimes even snowshoes don't prevent sinking to organs with indecent names . Path to Planina Jezero passable without special issues, not too icy, no sinking. There's even a path made. Beyond Planina Jezero no more tracks, had to go full snowshoes, which is of course much more strenuous. On south-facing slopes sinking already in the morning, afternoon on the rest. Sometimes it cracks unpleasantly under the snow, lucky the slopes aren't steep anywhere. To Koča this time over Prode, crossing (descent) on the south side is better. All lakes along the path are still frozen, the Seven Lakes at the hut showed just some very very blue water. At the hut three skiers who said Komarča is snow-free. And incredibly nice and warm weather for the season. I got a new tan, walked in a sleeveless t-shirt? At times it was scorching, penalty of course wet snow that sinks. Also, someone wrote on the forum that the road to Blato is normally passable. Forgot to say with chains. I was the only one at the top with my sx4 without chains, everyone else had them, as the road is icy in places. And I wouldn't be me if I didn't read the slightly misleading post. Also, in these conditions the path isn't short, it's a full-day hike.

Yes snowshoes might be needed and after 100m unnecessary again and that can repeat n-times. As for crampons basically you don't need them, but it can happen that they're useful...

In the mountains, both winter and summer, there are only two kinds of gear. Necessary and unnecessary. Then you go to the mountains and during the tour it happens that what you left home as unnecessary becomes very necessary, and at the end of the tour you realize that what you brought as necessary was completely unnecessary. The ratio of necessary to unnecessary changes proportionally with the mileage, either decreases or increases. In short: Without gear either you don't get anywhere (sinking too deep) or you risk unnecessarily (icy, hard). With gear the worst is carrying a couple of kilos unnecessarily. Even though you thought it wouldn't be unnecessary.
