On the entrance doors there were no other notices than that the hut is open on Sat-Sun and holidays, the other notice referred to COVID-19 measures.

No mention of any vacation. But if it's really true that they close the hut in August, i.e. in the middle of high season, that's very very bad, if not something worse. Tumova koča isn't just any hut, but it's the one where SPP passes, Slavnik is one of the more visited hills. Many a hiker doing SPP would probably overnight here if starting e.g. in Ankaran (about 1 day of normal hiking).

In short, this hut should be open every day of the week in summer season, not just weekends if the "caretaker(s)" even bother to open the door.

PS:
Years ago a tourist worker at the sea told me exactly that: We tourist workers work the most just when you guests rest.

This notice on the website, which maybe max.5% of hikers read is of course bla bla ...

Better would be if the mentioned PD found some students (following the example of some 10 Slovenian huts, say the Vršič ones), who certainly wouldn't pretend to go on vacation in peak season; with the hut tenant they would talk thoroughly.

OK, from my side enough about this topic, most hikers probably agree with me, those few advocates of this irregularity must exist too, since we're in a democracy. ;-)

Hard to say exactly for Slavnik, but I can say for our Kokoš (quite close, probably similar visitor profile), that there are fewest visitors, besides winter, right in mid-summer. Then people are at the sea or in "real" mountains. Peak season is spring and autumn. Ah, those doing SPP in 1 piece and sleeping in huts are very few and generally at 3rd category huts the turnover from (unannounced) overnights is a drop in the ocean.

Max 1% of hikers really need such a hut in this heat, and if there is really such thirst or hunger, it's a 1h walk to the nearest village

On the Karst edge it was more than excellent compared to conditions on Slavnik. On Slavnik the bora had its dance and since the sun couldn't penetrate from behind the clouds, it wasn't pleasant. Unfortunately no clear views either. Path without peculiarities. More at: https://www.gore-ljudje.si/Kategorije/Novosti/kra%c5%a1ki-rob-in-slavnik

Yesterday by bike on the road from Podgorje to Slavnik. Conditions good, snow was still just soft enough to reach the top without walking. Nice variation.

Today to Slavnik from Skadanščina. Snow starts a bit before halfway but little of it. Can walk without crampons. At the top snow is windblown. Today it was windy at the top but exceptional views across whole Istria and towards Julian Alps, Carnic Alps and Dolomites.

Yesterday a bit differently, on bikes from Kozina a bit for warming up via Ocizla to Socerb Castle. Then we descended towards Kastelca and continued the path over the AC towards Črnotiče. Here we rode on nice tracks all the way to Podgorje, where we headed along the macadam road all the way to Slavnik. Here the path climbs steeply for 6 km and the gradient does not ease up, but we made it to the top. Then there was only the descent to Kozina, ... The weather held for us, ... and at the end also the analysis of the tour Na Burji

We have been to Slavnik from several starting points before, from Prešnica, Podgorje, Hrpelje, this time first from Markovščina. In Kozina we turned towards Hrpelje, Matarsko podolje, towards Reka. In the village Markovščina we immediately noticed hiking and cycling signs for Slavnik. We went along the Slovenian hiking trail, also noticed signs for the European footpath E6. The path is well marked, no dilemmas on the path. According to the sign, it is 2 hours 30 to the top of Slavnik. Soon it completely cleared up and it got windy on the top, as usual. We had nice views to the Koper bay, but not as far as the Dolomites and Julians today. Short stop at the hut, some already ate gnocchi, others bobiče, we had coffee, tea and strudel. We returned towards Mali vrata, 2 hours from the top of Slavnik, total 3 hours to Skadanščina and another good half hour to the starting point. This direction is also well marked, the path pleasant and easy. On the meadow we found some nice apricots. To Ostrič from the top of Slavnik is 6 hours, we have it planned, but from another starting point.... On the way we also had a picnic, our Robi spoils us with bread that needs no additions! He really is a master, but we also had some Bela Krajina delicacies. On the way we bought honey, suckling pig. Great day in a super team. Total 600 m elevation gain, 17 km.

For information to those who don't know yet, the parking fee in Podgorje has been raised from 1€ to 3€. In addition, now you have to pay the parking fee every day of the week, not just on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays as before. For frequent visitors, who go up almost every weekend, sometimes even twice a weekend, this is quite a significant increase. Luckily, there are still other starting points where there is no parking fee yet.
