Yup, as Ruševec said, there are quite a few in KSA. I've seen the most of them in the grasses, there where we skirt the slope to that sign for Cjanovca where it branches to Hudicev boršt.. Also towards Javorov vrh near Sv. Jakob I haven't met them yet.
But I have no issues with them, because I like them. When I was younger I had a python

When we got home yesterday, I went right away to browse the internet. We looked at pictures of the Črnica snake too.
We concluded that maybe someone released the snake he had at home nicely into nature when he realized it wouldn't stay that small. Maybe?

Most encounters with them in mountains above Zadnja Trento - on one trip 4 of them!
P.S. Encounters with them are not unpleasant for me.
We must realize that we disturb their peace.
It's uncomfortable only walking such pathless areas through tall grass, because we might disturb someone resting!

The record of my adder encounters on one trip is held by Planina Korošica: met 7 adders on one trip... Regards!
P.S: There you meet them almost FOR SURE if you visit the planina when it's not crowded and around April-May when the snow melts... I'm writing this in case someone wants to see them...

When looking at these pics and reading your positive thoughts and views on snakes, I'm losing my fear a bit. I've met them a few times in the high mountains, once a small viper even on a tree branch (from Orlovo gnezdo towards Okrešelj, still quite low).

Yeah, I've met five too, namely on the mulatjera from Žaga to Polovnik (that one on the south side that we see from the road and which they claim is collapsed and unusable, which is not quite true as it's solid). Maybe they're right because of the bad reputation of the path; the snakes have peace along and on it... And the warm summer sun too...

All nice and good, our family also REALLY respects all life ("little ones" at home find a spider or bug, and I have to let it out nicely not squash and bin it).
BUT I have a question and please only constructive suggestions. We hike a lot in mountains with kids and I admit, in warm months on more solitary but marked paths (which we like to take to avoid crowds) I'm a bit scared. Kids have no fear at all (despite repeated lectures to just look at animals and better show daddy first ...), and snakes sadly aren't very "visible" animals. Can't keep kids "tied" around me whole trail. I looked around a bit, but still most worried when they go ahead and poke around, that no accident happens, because snake isn't a pet guinea pig after all .
