Chamois don't live forever either. From the pic, it looks like he was old and had lived his life.

Viharnik, I don't know what happened to him. I assume he was really old, because there were no other tracks around. I went to the info point, where we contacted friendly hunters. The next day, they went to look for him. Best regards

Nataša, thanks again for the info. The chamois died from an unknown reason, it was young, not old. @okmodko: the chamois stayed there, for eagles and other predatory species, just moved off the path, or out of sight.

Nataša.si, thanks once again for the tracks, which were really a big help to me, although I thought they were only one day old, you say two. Conditions for walking as said quite tough, due to wind-blown dry snow progress was quite slow... that was expected, as the path is on the north side. But true, behind you was already the hardest part, because just 50 meters further the snow was hard as stone, as the upper part gets quite a lot of sun as said, and so it was this time too. Best regards and safe steps P.S. they really moved the chamois - I didn't see it anywhere

Since last time I turned back a bit below the summit, I decide to go for Špik again. This time with Igor. He with skis, me without. Well, so ski tourers and postholers can go together on a trip too. Given the amount of snow, the lower part of Kačji graben is already demanding, as breaking trail and sinking starts right at the beginning. Higher up, on flatter terrain skis or snowshoes come in handy. Igor progressed nicely and quickly. But the snow crust wouldn't hold my weight. The higher part is full of avalanches, which allow faster progress because the snow is compacted. Breaking trail is tiring and long. Which means you arrive below the summit when the sun already has power and the snow is very rotten. Maybe better to start the tour very early. The descent isn't trivial either, it's faster, but you need to watch where you step so your foot doesn't go into some hole. Ploha , if you're tempted, tracks to the top this time, though I doubt much will be visible by the weekend.

Hello. Has anyone been to Špik in the last few days? How much snow is left? I'm a foreigner and coming to the Julian Alps next week. Looking for relatively avalanche-safe hikes. Please - suggest! Špik - OK? Velika Baba? Thanks a lot! (sorry for my Slovenian )

Winter said goodbye quickly in the valley and overnight we skipped spring and found ourselves in summer temperatures. It got very warm in the mountains too, so we were tempted to experience the last winter joys of this year. In the morning at dawn we parked at the bridge over the Pišnica river, and set off on the path. Wife with little son on foot to Vršič, me and the older one via Kačji graben to Špik. In the lower part of Kačji graben it's already bare ground, only in the gully itself there's some avalanche debris left, but it doesn't hinder walking. In the upper part snow starts, covering most markers. Two guys from Primorska ahead of us were wandering a bit here and there looking for the right path. On this section walking was quite strenuous, as deep holes hid in the dwarf pine under the snow where feet occasionally sank. Above the tree line it was better, snow wasn't frozen but quite compacted, so boots didn't sink much. In the upper part we used crampons and ice axe, as the slope is steep and even with wind-crust snow it could slide. At the top it wasn't cold, but windy in gusts. Views were quite foggy, probably due to weather change to follow. We descended the upper part slowly and carefully, lower down it was possible to glissade enjoyably with boots all the way to the forest where nasty holes awaited us, lower spring and even lower happy wife and little son who had just returned safely from Vršič.

Spik has been quiet on the forum for a while, so I'll briefly describe today's ascent. Early morning start from the bridge over Pišnica and then walk to the junction for Kačji graben. Path through the gully without issues, pleasant temperatures, after leaving the dwarf pines short snowfields begin, which can be bypassed. Higher on the scree, when the path turns right towards the ridge between Lipnica and Spik, half the scree up to the top of the ridge is under snow. In the morning it was hard so I used crampons and ice axe, then continued to the summit where I enjoyed the views and returned the same way to the start. On the way down the snowfield crampons weren't needed as the snow had softened. Nice greetings to the three hikers we met at the start of the scree on my way back, if they read this forum.

Today on Spik very early, up via gully, down via scree. Personally recommend crampons to anyone going up via scree, because the snowfield is still quite steep and not easy to bypass. Via gully also some snowfield at the top, but no problem. In the last 50 meters also some snow, probably fell today overnight, so especially for descent it was necessary to be quite careful.

@ zvončnica: which path did you take up/down? If I understand correctly snow is not an obstacle and it can be bypassed by climbing the ridge. Is this part suitable for everyone? Thanks! lp

@zvončnica did we meet by chance when we three were returning, right below the summit (before the last snowfield)? ..it was already quite afternoon though, because we enjoyed three hours alone on top ,only reason we headed back was that wonderful trough at the hut in Krnica Matej K. we went up and down via Grunt. Snow basically no obstacle. But some experience moving in rocky (broken?) terrain desirable, because last part pretty steep and crumbly. Not some super demanding route though..

Matej K., up from hut in Krnica, some snow below summit but not problematic, can avoid it. Back same path, really didn't want to go over Kačji greben, cuz path from hut in Krnica very nice. Daaam, yes we met as you were leaving, right at snowfield, I was a bit worried I'd need ice axe, but it turned out can skirt snow over scree too, otherwise snow held well, greet you all nicely, hope we meet again, will check your pics to recognize you next time

Is the path over Kačji greben dry or doesn't require winter gear? Thanks for reply!
