Does anyone perhaps know the condition of the road to Valvazorja. Are there nasty or tolerable potholes. Matej

Steepest parts asphalted. With Clio no problems.

To the starting point by car. That's why there are forest roads.

Above 2000m there is quite some new snow (30 on 20 old), making walking difficult. Below that height the snow depth decreases and is only a few cm thick

Stol is a very dangerous mountain in winter conditions! Suddenly an avalanche can surprise us or we encounter icy slabs. Anyone heading up should have crampons and ice axe.

19.01.08, THREE LJUBLJANČANI HEAD FOR STOL. TWO CURVES BEFORE VALVAZORJEM WE PARKED THE CAR AND WALKED ON. CONDITIONS FROM HUT QUITE MUDDY (SOUTHERN SNOW MIXED WITH MUD) UP TO 1300M, THEN SUDDENLY REAL TRAIL-BREAKING STARTS. ON WAY UP MEET THREE OLDER GENTLEMEN ADVISING AGAINST SUMMIT DUE TO UNTRACKED PATH AND AVALANCHE RISK. BUT STUBBORNNESS WINS AND ALL THREE CONTINUE TO TOP. WEATHER MISTY CLOUDY ALL WAY, ON SUMMIT STRONG WIND IN SOME PARTS. SO ... ROUTE DONE - EVERYONE TO STOL!

Yesterday I was up with a friend, since we were early it was icy, so crampons mandatory! Otherwise wonderful and gorgeous weather, really shame not to go. Towards noon snow turns southern, still icy! Sebastjan

Today three "great mountaineers" headed for Stol. First part through forest still icy, so crampons not amiss. Second part from "prižnica" well trodden. Since along ridge, real fun with north wind, so returned via "graben". Walks nicely as snow quite firm, so conclusion EXCELLENT.

On Sunday 10.2. I drove along the road with a normal car to 3/4 of the way and parked roadside. Further icy. On foot another 15 min to Valvazorja. On Stol winter conditions, on the return the lower part muddy. Regards and luck MMilan

This morning Janez, Jernej and I set off for Stol from Završnica valley. We parked at Tinčkova hut and turned left through the forest in fog towards the saddle. After an hour of walking we got above the fog, wonderful views. Through Orlice snow was drifted, up to 20 cm on frozen base in places. Janez ascended with skis without trouble, we two on foot behind him. It's true we were breaking trail, on the last slope before the ridge we hit drifted tracks of predecessor, so we had a bit easier trail breaking. On top snow was already quite crusty in the morning. Wind does its thing, grass visible in places, so snow on south side will soon be gone if no precipitation and cooling. LP Andrej

How's the road to Tinčkova hut? Is the slope under Žaga still badly torn up??

29.3. My buddy and I headed for Stol. Due to the snow early in the morning we started hiking a bit higher from the parking at Završnica Lake. We continued on the road for a while then turned to the path towards the stone hut and then up to the summit. But already at the start hard work as no trail. We broke trail in wet snow getting deeper and deeper. On the way out of the forest breaking up to 80cm. So to 1900m took a full 4 hours. During the break and thinking we decided to turn back due to avalanche risk, wind, breaking, and sudden weather worsening. The decision was very wise as when we reached the car and half-hour drive Karavanke and Julijci not visible at all - thunderstorm. But no regret for ,,failure,, it was great fitness training.

I think you did well to turn back. If they were Czechs, they'd probably continue

Interested in current conditions for ascent to Stol. On Wednesday I have time and thinking of going up. Mainly interested in current avalanche danger on path from Valvazor hut upwards and forecast for midweek. Maybe shift to end of week anyway Thanks for replies Franci
