Today up via Žirovnica. Not much snow, crampons only from Mali Stol up, preventively so conditions still very good now

Road closed to traffic with a sign, you go on dry ground roughly to the middle, then snow and increasingly slippery. Saw traces that two even drove into the ditch and some struggled with the car. Got to the asphalt at the junction because I have good tires. Took poles and crampons, but on the Žirovnica path didn't need crampons. At the top cold and windy, met one more who was already descending.

Yesterday through Završnica valley, past Tinčkova hut, over Zagon to marked path and up to the top. Snow up to half a meter, icy in places, cold wind blowing. Interestingly, least wind right at the top. Descended past Valvasor.

Another great report. Lots of useful info! Apropos picture 17. If you had done the profile earlier, would you still continue up the gully on that base? Or can you reliably assess stability with the stability test and if that crusty layer would hold? Just curious from a beginner's perspective, so pls take the question purely that way . Namely, only last winter after the course I started with (easier) winter tours. Now slowly progressing and gathering info.

@Trobec yes we did meet, so far away that I saw only your silhouette on the ridge of Little Stol.

It felt like it... didn't meet others from that direction Tomco, for more reliable data you need more profiles, as the base can change quickly. In this specific case I continued, the upper crusty layer withstood quite a lot of force. But turned back just a couple of meters higher, when the snow became loose and unbonded and I would have had to posthole up to my ass if I wanted to continue in those fairly unfavorable conditions. General avalanche danger is 2... but locally it can of course increase. In such conditions I prefer not to take risks

Today almost no wind. Above the bench serious snow starts, track a bit improvised but still gets you to the top.

Plan for today was Pripravniška to Mojstrovke, but canceled due to unclear cornice situation above the gully. No big deal. Anyway wanted to do Stol once by end of winter, mine hasn't been in winter yet, why not today. Here no fear something will break on you and carry you down . Relatively early start from Valvasor (06:20) paid off as snow up there still holding. But relatively little snow compared to similar time last year end of March. Eh, nothing new, this winter is what it is. Especially after this hot week... No specialties of course, except lots of annoying icy sections on Žirovnica to Prižnica. From gully between Stols to top direct through that most pronounced chute. Snow there very compact (read: still frozen) and gripped well. Nice pitch here to spice up otherwise more hiking tour. After descent from top used plenty time for practice ice axe arrest and probing buried transceivers. Good to refresh material. And many more times. Back leisurely via Zabreška. Nicely warming on south slopes. Beer at Valvasor hut properly chilled.

My plans were different a few days ago for today (Jalovec), but I was a bit unsure due to new snow. Well, there's quite a bit on Stol too, starts at Prižnica, unfortunately fog too which was getting thicker. Wind was strengthening too, gusts several times the forecasted values. At the start old footprints helped, wind had filled them though. Doubt they're from Tomcot, three weeks old. Higher up snow mostly frozen, no degrees anymore, visibility within pole reach. Summit part via Žirovnica path I know quite well, but orientation failed me at some point obviously. Due to extreme conditions summit not important anymore, just wanted to hut (tho know no winter room) for shelter. Tried twice, hut nowhere. Wandered unknown area and slope not typical for Stol. Finally caught gully between two Stols and descended slowly, hugely relieved. At home check Strava track in horror realize those slopes deep in Austria.... Good I'm 'young' and fit, just head sometimes doesn't cut it. Posted only as well-meant warning to all hikers, fog biggest b**** and turn moment not sure where you are. Debate open, besides fog wind.... criticisms I take easiest.

There is no criticism for such a decision. Only praise counts for such a rational decision in f... fog!

Did you perhaps check the GPS on your phone in the fog? I assume it would still show the location accurately enough for rough orientation.

Ha, just a step to blown-away fog. But farmer is farmer - with Drago we installed Locus Map years ago, a super app, PeakFinder, which shows the hill shape and its name, even on Strava, which I had on all the time, I didn't look. Just a click on the phone and everything would be clear. But what when that 'click' wasn't in the head...

Tone, I fully agree regarding fog combined with snowy surroundings. On my very familiar Ratitovec, I have heard tons of disorientation stories in fog around the hut even from almost daily visitors.

If you'd opened the map, you'd know the direction to the hut immediately. But then it wouldn't be exciting. Tone, where are the pics?
