Wonderful Saturday, start at 3am at Završniško jezero, onwards to Valvasor and sunrise on Stol, continuation past Potoški Stol, Vajnež and Mali vrh to Koča na Golici. Descent to Planina pod Golico where I had transport back to the lake. Path without features, one snow patch between Mali Stol and Stol. Tasty finish in Boler. All in all 29 km and a bit over 2300 elevation gain. Time with stops 9h 30m. But I had the bad luck that from the lake to Valvasor I took a slightly longer path and then to Stol missed the more direct path and took the gentler one. Caught the sunrise at the last moment. All's well that ends well.

On Saturday I'd go to Stol from Trat via climbing path back past Celovška koča, but does anyone have info on snow, is winter gear needed? How is access to starting point (road)?

Stol a bit differently, especially to make the most of the nice day. We quickly agreed nasmeh. Maybe this idea will come in handy for someone, so here's a short description ...

We started at Ljubelj and past koča na Zelenici headed to the upper marked path to Vrtača. We didn't go there, but at the turning point continued straight to Austria all the way to saddle Belščica. From there, past Celovška koča, we steeply descended to the first signs for ferrata at about 1400 m. After a flawless ferrata we climbed to Stol and after a stop at Prešernova koča descended via the eastern scree. The path is marked and in good condition, shortcuts not recommended. This was followed by a descent into the hellish green veggie cauldron and ascent to the junction with the morning path. The rest is classic, more in the photostory ...

One more thing ... for service at Prešernova koča you'll have to open your wallets wide. They charge 8€ for a Union tin, coffee 3€. We didn't get a bill, though at that price it should be on gold paper velik nasmeh. If you want something cheaper, you'll have to go to the Dolomites nasmeh.
It will be a long day, so we already park early at Ljubelju1
In the morning chill one ascends the service road of the former ski area2
At the hut there is no one, but a strong onion smell spreads far around. At least the cook is already up :)3
Vrtača and Mala glava4
On the opposite side is the sunny Begunjščica5
Srednji vrh below Vrtača is also a rewarding goal6
Stol, our goal this time. We will ascend to it from Austria, descend to our side7
Svačica, another beautiful peak right on the border. We will cross the border to the left of it8
Ovčji vrh, the home mountain of Celovše koče. To the left is Mačenska planina9
There far away we will climb up the scree to the start of the *Hochstuhl Klettersteig* via ferrata10
The descent to the hut has a not very nice rocky jump, but it is fully secured11
From the Austrian side there is a nice view of the Orlic ridge12
Once there was the Celovška koča, now there is a solar power plant in its place :)13
Further descent into the valley. In the background rises Vajnež14
We descend almost to 1400 m, there a signpost directs us towards the via ferrata15
We'll have to go up there, all the way to that spur16
Two young women in the entry part of the via ferrata17
We quickly pass them and proceed at our own pace. There is enough space for overtaking everywhere18
Except here, where you have to cross a good ten meters of inclined slabs19
Ahead it is easier. Overall mostly A/B difficulty, only a few sections are C20
The via ferrata is usually hot stuff, this time a pleasant breeze cools it. A real rarity21
A little more and we will finish the secured part. Not many people22
View of the ridge towards Potoški Stol and Vajnež23
Last yellow signposts for the day24
Austrian cross a little below the summit of Stol. It has been standing there for many years, so it is a bit tired :)25
At the top it really pulls negligently, so we quickly descend26
View back at the numerous paths towards the summit27
Here we will take a longer break. A long path still awaits us28
Dear Prešernova hut. They obviously charge you for the nice view and fresh air in the price of the drink29
We descend back to the saddle and look for the signpost towards Zelenica30
We will descend to the eastern side along a long scree slope31
The path is well marked and in good condition. Scrambling on shortcuts is rather rough, so it does not attract us32
Snapshot from the path. Alpine flowers are in full bloom33
Here right, at the next junction then left34
We are in the hottest part of the path. The valley V Kožnah is like a cauldron through which we must pass35
View back. Down there in the greenery it was hellishly hot36
The remaining part of the path is pure routine, walked countless times. We quickly arrive at the hut at Zelenica37
Conclusion. There are not many cars even for a nice weekend, and there were unusually few hikers38
Walked path. In total it added up to 19 km and 1900 m elevation gain39

Usually nice, congrats.
On pic 24 not the last yellow sign, because the last is on pic 34, deep in Slovenian territory... Why problem to put local red signs there?

Regarding the last picture, 39... Does that dashed mark between Vrtača, Grad and Svačica indicate some path, is it passable? Or just the state border?

Here you have something small about Grad, far from a stroll:

Grad is really wild and crumbly.

From Svačica to Stol along the ridge, it's ZZ pathless, good to have rope, as there are plenty of bolts on exposed spots.

Today 6.7. with better half to Stol via Trat via climbing route.

The weather forecast was good for today, the path was quite visited. No peculiarities, except someone did a big necessity by the path (could be smelled even climbing under the crime scene) and left wiping papers visibly. Could hide that under bushes at least. jezen

Plans more ambitious, to climb Celovško špica and maybe Svačica, but weather crossed plans. Above 2000m on upper path to Stol closing in, from ridge exit strong wind. With fog and wind veto on further climbs, unreasonable to push pathless especially first time.

End at nice Celovško hut for lunch. Windy there too, not too sorry for shortened tour.

All in all, good day nasmeh. Better weather next time.
The morning was very nice.1
At the start of the Hochstuhl via ferrata.2
The path is really beautiful and excellently secured.3
Up there unfortunately we also had the same, plus very strong wind.4
Below Celovška špica and Jelenček.5
View of the unconquered summit on the descent to Celovška koča. It even cleared a bit, but the wind did not subside.6
Unfortunately it wasn't as tasty as it looks :)7
Even the cows on Mačenska planina hid from the wind.8
