I'm interested in what the current path to Stol or Vajnež is like for pedestrians. lp

On New Year's Eve sunny morning we set off to Stol. Weather divine, despite minus a couple degrees due to sun no cold was felt. Hikers only a sample, later we found out why - sinking soft snow. But despite all we managed to reach the top, where it was blowing hard, but satisfaction at the view of surrounding peaks was so much greater.

Happy New Year! Extremely beautiful pictures. How far can you get by car and what's the path like past Urbasa and Vajneža.

You have to leave the car already quite below at the parking lot, except with an off-roader you get to the junction where the path to Potoška planina leads; further it's not plowed. After the last snow it doesn't look like there have been many visitors, as there aren't many tracks, and avalanche danger exists, as some have already been triggered somewhere; especially on the way back you need to watch out, because under the soft snow there's ice and you can slip and land several meters lower; crampons mandatory.

Hi! I turned left from Prižnica into the gully. There were tracks. Unfortunately tracks of someone who went down there... so had to posthole a bit. Snow is dry, loose, in some places even "holds". From the gully went straight to the summit. Snow there also loose. Ice only on the forest path, otherwise quite fine. Crampons only on ascent so less slipping on loose snow in gully. On return met Spoty with his group. Good luck everyone!

I was on Stol one day before New Year. Climbed the central gully of Stol (past Prižnica). Already at start a jump I didn't dare over. Bypassed left over some slide then via scree higher back into gully. At Prižnica could turn to good trodden crust and to Prešeren hut in half hour. But for training postholed straight up gully to top. Snow sinking to knees, very tiring. Zigzagged for firmer snow. Higher to border ridge and up to Stol summit. Met mates from Radovljica Alpine Section and descended gully past Orlic or whatever. Half hour (running, butt sliding) to Tičkova hut. Super tour! Maybe someone knows conditions on path to Stol. Weekend should be quite ok for such ascents, wonder if trodden? LP

"Winter" path to Stol goes directly to the saddle between both summits. Started in Žirovnica as road to Valvazorjevo not plowed. From there track follows marks in forest part then straight up. However easy it looks, crampons and ice axe recommended on steeper slopes due to slip danger. Won't talk about conditions as they change much within one day. Afternoon loud avalanches from strong thaw. LP

Hi! If anyone was recently (read: two or three days ago) at the summit, please say a bit what the conditions are like, asking mainly because of avalanches??? Thanks and LP

On Sunday I went on a short trek to Roblek hut under Begunjščica - have to say that on the eastern side of Stol - towards Austria and Vrtača it boomed and rumbled nicely, and down flying through gullies.. SW part of Vrtača very avalanche-prone - cracks visible how the snowpack cracked and slid.... so this weekend it was surely quite risky to go up there... Snow is still to wait at least until the weekend???? --- and then when going, need to start an hour earlier and go --- so that before it gets soaked and strong thaw starts you finish the tour..

Today, after four hours, I sat on Stol in exceptional weather with wonderful views; occasionally it blew quite strongly, but that's the price of visiting Stol. Ascent via Sevško Zabreška planina and then directly up the gully. Snow compact, mandatory crampons and ice axe; due to considerable steepness and partial rock climbing, great caution and experience needed. Descent via Žirovnica path, snow already quite soft, hence slip risk. Total hiking time 7 hours.

Today's ascent to Stol via Žirovnica path was "colored" by a rainbow at the start, followed by snowfall, then trudging as fresh snow from recent days had erased the trodden path well, and searching for the route to the top, for which fog took care to cut through it and wind below the summit wiping tracks, so conditions were anything but pleasant. Except for poles and gaiters, no other gear needed. But I was very glad when lower down and could see where I was stepping and roughly where I was...

I just can't believe how many cars visit Valvazor hut. I remember my first February winter memorial hike in '82, when gale-force wind mixed with ice in gusts reached great power. Guide yelled lie down, I grabbed the nearest one's pants legs. Namely wind was already lifting me properly. In the hut shelter and tea. Well, then I remember the road full of heavy rocks, so only the supply jeep got up. Lp-Rok

Soon there'll be a barrier in the valley, then it'll be like old times again, path under the feet. They'll also arrange parking and WC. Lp!

And does this mean that following the Bohinj example also here in Upper Carniola they'll start charging for parking? Attack me with all cannons, but I'm sorry we won't be able to drive there anymore. I don't mean driving there for a drink and back home. The footpath to Valvazor hut from the valley is quite pleasant if not planning a longer route. For some (those who must watch daily hiking hours) such extension means end of visiting Stol. Pity. Actually pity also the well-built and maintained road that will overgrow, probably much work invested over years.
