Maybe even nicer path to Stol starts at Zelenica, where chairlift operates in summer weekends. On the way one can also hop to scenic Svačica or Srednji vrh.

Of course on foot, but our mountain friends don't have just a few crosses behind them.

Valvazor hut already has almost no traffic (looking at profit from catering activity)... well, if it's really like that with the barrier now, it'll "croak". Down in Završnica it'll be a "mountain of tin" and surely someone will (again following the example) diligently collect 10€ there too. The chairlift at Zelenica is also not free. Is there anything else?

Viharnik, you're right, the path via Zelenica seems even nicer to me too, I use it occasionally (also for ascents to other peaks), but sometimes a change is just right and this one mentioned above works well for me occasionally.

Where does it go from Vajnež towards Stol - direction Golica? I saw nice paths along the ridge, but I don't know where it goes, is there a hut further?... some nice peak or plateau, of course, when the snow melts.

It goes towards Struška and Golica. From Stol to the hut on Golica about 5 hours, so another 4 hours from Vajnež. Otherwise under Struška is Javorniški Rovt. So via Medji dol you can descend to Javorniški Rovt (two hours descent). These are marked paths - to the top of Vajnež itself no markings.

Let me add and correct a bit. From Medji dol, which is the same as Planina Seče or Barensattel, in the left direction after 2 hours descent past the spring of Javornik stream and small mountain lake and settlement by the road-(Javorniški rovt), we reach Pristava above Javorniški rovt. There is the so-called Ziosov Dom Pristava- 973 m. From there continue towards Križovec- Pusti rovt- Sedlo Suha- Mala golica- Krvavka- Golica. If not descending to Pristava, the entire ridge path from Vajnež to Golica is as follows: From Vajnež descend back to Karavanke transverse which crosses Belščica (plateau where Vajnež and Mali vrh are). The mentioned path leads us westwards under Mali vrh-2017 m, which we can visit, further past Kamnitnik-1858 on the left, rightwards towards Rida amphitheater (interesting mountain cirque), after which the path goes over scree. From Rida to the mentioned planina Seče-1698, from there continue uphill (direction Golica). The path crosses south slope of Struška-1943, whose summit is right above us. Follows Belska planina-1700, from there descend to sedlo Kočna. From there the path crosses still Ptičji vrh-1550, after which it brings us to the next saddle -Suha. Ridge path then steeply uphill (directly along the border with Austria) first to Mala golica-1646, then to Krvavka-1785, finally to Golica-1834. Probably it's clear to you that it's a full-day tour, as you must first climb to Vajnež itself, e.g. from Potoška planina takes 1.5-2 hours (and some strength). If you want to visit each peak separately along the ridge path, you'll be satisfied at the goal but very tired. Otherwise it's definitely one of the nicest, panoramic paths in our country, especially in the following flowering months (late May to July). Conditioning preparations won't be superfluous. Lots of joy!

Thanks Heinz! You really described it to me in detail, so it'll work; that means quickly build up fitness; my frequent question still, no exposure?

On the path mainly no, except somewhat on the ridge of the last two peaks i.e. Mala Golica and Krvavka. But not some special exposure, just a bit more caution needed, e.g. due to wind (thus also weather dependent). Otherwise, if you really head out on the mentioned path, by that part at the path end you'll be fully accustomed to the valley views on the north side, so I'm sure no vertigo to expect. I think each of us amateurs at certain points in the mountains experiences feelings of instability similar to vertigo caused by excessive fear. Several causes, e.g. wrong thoughts on serious consequences of possible accident etc., but surely one of the biggest is acclimatization - lack of habituation to this wonderful living space. When watching chamois, how they dance so easily and confidently on the most exposed spots for us, you wonder only how they are not troubled by vertigo. Answer: they are accustomed. You too on this few-hour tour will get enough "evolution", so at the end you won't care at all about exposure, which anyway, as said, is not particularly noteworthy. To sum up: fear on this path is completely unnecessary. Officially also "easy" - realistic and correct.

Yesterday quite some visitors on Stol. Snow starts at 1600m and is crusty to the top. Crampons not needed yesterday, but must be in backpack. Weather unique, gliders and paragliders circling us. Two Romanians without gear planned up but gave up, suspect they aimed for Austria.

What are the conditions like on Stol.

Conditions are relatively relative! A little joke, me too, I join the question, because I also plan to go up one morning. When I look at it I notice warm weather nicely takes away the snow, I think no more problem.

I was at the top yesterday on the path from Valvasor. On the left path there are no problems, there is still some snow but you can avoid it. The top itself is in the snow, but no problem.

On the path over Zabreško planina it's worse, because there are avalanches at three spots and crossing without ice axe can be dangerous.

Today 20.5.- up Žirovniška and later central gully between both Stols (snow). Well, I had feeling that from there path (Žirovniška) mainly snowy, so went middle (with crampons). Down past Prešeren hut (to there -from Veliki Stol, along ridge still lots snow, but no obstacle- even without crampons = o.k., further down no issues at all, expected more snow, but actually cross only 30m- goes without gear. Path zigzagging over snow too no need, since "million" long trails same dir. So conclude: conditions dry. Go!

On Saturday, planning a trip to stol. From the read posts I see that the only suitable path now is the žirovniška path, but judging by the pics, in the gully between both stols there is quite some snow. Wondering how many meters to cross on snow and if the žirovniška path is safely passable without crampons? thanks and nice mountaineering greeting
