Yes, today Storžič was on the agenda. A lone peak stretched between the Karavanke and the Savinja Alps. Although my wife and I had planned to visit it in winter conditions, we delayed so long that spring overtook us. But no problem, crampons and ice axe stayed home, we set off fully, already almost in summer conditions, to this almost fully dry summit. To Bašeljski preval it was already quite warm, so after the initial meters I continued in short sleeves. Before Bašeljski preval a strong south wind started blowing and I quickly got "red cheeks" on my bare arms. But it passed quickly when two nice ladies at the strongest gust asked me to photograph them together with their camera. Then they quickly headed to Bašeljski vrh. Through the bushes the wind calmed, to the passage on the south side where it started blowing again stronger. I put on my windbreaker, cap on my head and quickly to the summit again. There is very little snow on the path itself, so no big problems. Just a bit more caution is needed. Since there was strong wind on the summit, we quickly headed back to Kališče where almost summer idyll started again. But conditions can still, according to the season, quickly turn to real winter ones, but currently it does not look good. Anyway, for us a beautiful and at times windy day.

I have one question. Not the first time I see Storžič mentioned as a lone peak. I always thought that a lone peak (as a geographic term) is a hill/mountain standing in the middle of a plain. Interesting, SSKJ also says so: "osamelec ... 1. geogr. isolated higher elevation on plain: Šmarna gora is a lone peak". Can someone explain to me why Storžič would be called a lone peak, since it is not that isolated among the other KSA hills?? Otherwise very nice photos =) EDIT: so as not to clutter the Storžič topic too much, right here - thanks Bojan for the answer!

Storžič is NOT a lone peak. Storžič is a mountain embedded in the ridge of the K-S Alps. And there are no real lone peaks around here! Usually Šmarna gora or Šmarjetna are counted as such here. But geologically both little hills belong to nearby ranges. They look isolated only because the Sava silted and leveled the valley and it just looks like the hills are not connected to any ridge. If we removed all Pleistocene clays and sands we would find that both mentioned hills are connected to the surrounding hills.

As a loner it was meant more in a figurative sense, that visually, say from the highway, it looks more detached from the Karavanks and also from KSA, although geologically it belongs to KSA. So Storžič is undoubtedly a representative of KSA and there is no doubt about it.

Tomorrow, I'd go from Mač to Storžič and I'm wondering what to take with me, what's the condition after the recent rains? Branko

Since there was almost no rain in this area, I think conditions are similar to what they were on Saturday before the rains. What you'll take with you is entirely your decision. You have to reckon that despite fairly nice weather, conditions can change locally very quickly to some unpleasant snowy shower, fitting for this time of year. Have a nice hike.

How come there was no rain? Here in Kranj it rained solidly all Sunday through Monday morning. Actually what interests me most is if winter gear is still needed, because I prefer as little as possible with me and fast pace rather than idk overly stuffed backpack with stuff I don't need. After all it's 3 hours up under 2 down not some crazy tour..

Today pleasant, I decided to take the unmarked path along the ridge from Bašelj (Laško) to Storžič summit, met no one (ok, one paraglider in the air), from Bašelj saddle they were trickling down one after another. On the summit it was blowing more than just for show, some snow too, anyway really spring conditions. Also hopped to Bašelj peak to sign [the logbook] among the Kljuke and then back unmarked down (that one past Košuta not too likeable to me). Enjoyed the silence, met no one neither up nor down (from home down).

Also from Mač to summit today no processions - looks like everyone was at the cleanup action . Otherwise from Kališče to summit really only on about 4 spots some snow patches. But it was strange to me that water at Kališče outside not flowing - maybe someone knows reason (due to small amount of snow or reason elsewhere?)... Regards, Janez

It's been gone since early February, froze in the pipe between spring and hut.

I'm also interested in conditions on Storžič. Judging by pictures crampons not needed, or am I wrong?

Conditions same as in the upper pictures. Only a bit soggy, the lack of precipitation really shows.

Yesterday, 28th March, I set off for Storžič quite a lot earlier than planned for this year because the conditions are already quite spring-like. The path is without peculiarities, just on a few parts there is still some ice where one needs to be careful. The weather was fantastic, just a slight breeze occasionally. A very, very nice tour after a long time, so I haven't enjoyed it like this for a long time. And I'm attaching some of my pics and also a video on this link. Regards! Tone

Mr. Tone, is the mentioned path safe for a 10-year-old child? He was already on Viševnik, Tošč, Planika... Thanks

If he has stamina, he shouldn't have problems with the mentioned path. It is not dangerous, except a bit before the summit where a little more caution is needed due to the risk of slipping.

What are the conditions like through the gully?

Conditions are still quite wintery. I went last Saturday, 24.3., and I think not much has changed since then. The gullies are still full of snow, the rocks icy and crampons don't help much. It was quite strenuous

I went through the gully on Thursday 29.3. and it seemed strenuous to me too; for crossing the gully an ice axe would even come in handy, I expected less snow and ice, for a nicer ascent we will have to wait a bit longer...
