Sun was already calling into nature early in the morning. Last week's failed attempt on Storžič got another chance today. Since it was a holiday, from Mač to Kališče it was a real ant hill. Overnight a little snow fell and the later the hour, the more the path resembled a skating rink. Short break at Dom na Kališču. Information on today's forerunners was scarce. One turned back at one-third of the way to the Storžič summit, some went to Bašelj peak. "Nothing, let's go check," my friend and I agreed, we can always turn back. We started with crampons on and ice axe on the backpack. The higher we climbed above Bašelj pass, the more snow there was. Powder snow, below already well processed snow. In places it sank to the knees and more, higher up the soft terrain mixed with rocks sticking out of the snow and icy patches, and it was time for crampons. On the way we met two more hikers returning from the summit who made a track for us . Towards the summit the snow became firmer and the path more pleasant, we were grinning. Really nice hike . No doubt, tonight we'll sleep well .

So the best winter approach is via Kališče?

Definitely it depends on current avalanche conditions, technical knowledge,... hard to say. For me the approach through Peto žrelo is very nice, hope conditions this year allow skiing it down, last year I didn't manage. LP Andrej

Today I was on Storžič. Start from Bašelj. Snow or snow patches start beyond the hut at Kališče, but conditions at least today were OK, so I reached the top without using crampons and ice axe, but caution against slipping is not superfluous! Also reached the top via the path from Lovrenc, that path is reportedly dry except for snow under the summit, and via the path over Škarjev rob, where there was so much snow that they skied back. Back to the hut over Bašeljski vrh... The day was nice, mists lingered on the top here and there, it was warm

Wednesday, 28.4 Ascent to Storžič through Žrelo. Conditions excellent, sun, good crust. On certain sections of Žrelo there is still plenty of snow (ice underneath), extra careful here, without crampons + ice axe no way, not smart to be too bold… After reaching the top of Žrelo, then 'along the summits' (no major issues, except caution/attention due to exposure) to Storžič summit. To the valley via easier path (right after the cross to the right, I think it's called Škarjev Rob), … here really still very much snow, gaiters very useful. With the time already around 14:00, so sinking nicely, although the lower part of the path can be run. Hut still not open, from around 15.6, the caretaker was there by chance. lp

Hi! Can someone please write if the path to Storžič from Laško is safe without ice axe and crampons? No avalanche danger? Many thanks! Kamila

I was at the summit on 29.4. via Lovrenc and SW ridge, path dry, no avalanche danger, south snow last 5 min to summit, no need for crampons or ice axe; path from Javornik through gully still almost all snow, from Kališče dir. some snow patches, north side still quite some snow

I'm interested if anyone recently went to Storžič through the Fifth Žrelo?

DOM POD STORŽIČEM-STORŽIČ-MALA POLAJNA-TOLSKI VRH-KRIŠKA GORA Today I was with a friend on Storžič. Start from in front of Dom pod Storžičem over Škarjev rob, need to cross some snowfields, need a bit more caution. Snow melting fast, so at such warm weather in a couple days it won't be there anymore. From top we then went along southern slope to Mala Poljana to Tolski vrh and then along ridge to Kriška gora. Goal at Gozd....

Tadej, wouldn't you move this to another forum? I'm looking for info, and I stumble on grammar discussions about "whether it's correctly written kaša or kasha". So far I thought such discussions are reserved for PZS forum, now I see they're spreading here too. And just because there were no such arguments here, I liked (like) this forum better. Wanted to ask, are the snowfields on the path dangerous. Is it necessary to have crampons for crossing or can it be done without, of course with a good dose of caution. Thanks in advance for answer (preferably without correcting my grammar errors, which I know a pedant can find).

Sorry for interrupting your grammar debate. Interested in the path through the gorge. Is the path fully passable? Is there still any snow on the path? Thanks for answer.

Road from Bašelj to Laško village is asphalted. How many km can you still go further by car towards sv. Lovrenc and in what condition is the macadam.

With a car you can get quite high if going to Storžič. http://www.hribi.net/izlet/lasko_storzic_cez_kalisce/3/85/993 The initial part above Laško is steep and quite rutted (last week), further on it's better. We went on foot. Well, one let herself be carried. How far someone drives depends on how much he pities the car, how much he thinks about walking in mountains, not driving (should be, otherwise it all loses sense) and how much ecological awareness one has; - not necessarily in this order.

Yes Gorazd, that's the link I meant. I'll probably do it from Mač, although it's a bit longer. Thanks for info.
