18.5. Ravenska Kočna - ferrata Češka koča - Žrelo - Kranjska koča - climbing path to Great Baba - back via Slovenska pot to Kočna - Surprised by the rock friability on path to Great Baba. Consequently this climbing path is quite demanding, as you need to constantly check that holds are somewhat solid. I heard rolling stones at least ten times. Otherwise no snow on path anymore, some snow patches but no issue. Used ice axe twice, no crampons, but helmet, climbing gloves and via ferrata kit essential.

Today on Baba. By bike to Jezersko, from Ravenska kočna to Jenkova planina then along the ridge to the summit. The path completely dry.

Nice path to the Carinthian Baba. Especially up Rudijeva vertikala. Another group went behind me. Just below the summit rain caught me. Suddenly it clouded over and for about fifteen minutes I sheltered. Then it cleared and on the summit I could dry everything. Another hiker came behind me. She said others preferred to turn back. We descended together to the hut.

I walked in the sun to Ledine. Heavy backpack for the three-day tour

full of flowers especially now rhododendrons blooming

Yesterday on Velika Koroška Baba. Circular tour: Ravenska Kočna-Štuvarjeva planina-Češka koča-Žrelo-Ledine (Vodine)-Rudijeva vertikala-Velika Koroška Baba-Jezersko sedlo-Ledinski vrh-Ledine-Hunter's path-Ravenska Kočna. Upper part of the path to Štuvarjeva planina is new since now there's a road up to there, old path to Češka koča closed due to construction and forestry works. No running water at Češka koča so better bring your own especially if heading to Kočna, Grintovec or Skuta. Path through Žrelo very unpleasant, broken terrain, awkward gravelly gully crossings. Towards end of new secured section steps by cable really very narrow. Water flows at Ledine so you can refill. Ledinski vrh no stamp and will be replaced soon, same for logbook at V.Baba. Otherwise nothing special.

Some snapshots from today's ramble with Metod. Through Žrelo to Kranjska koča on Ledine and via Rudijeva vertikala to Velika baba. Down the ridge via Mala koroška baba to Jenkova planina and to the start. Quite cold but less wind than previous days. Path without issues. Some snow on north side but no winter gear needed. Nice!! Also stopped at the lake for coffee and gibanica.

Given that snow will whiten the peaks in the coming days, today was the last nice snow-free tour. Ravenska Kočna through Žrelo (no sign below that the path is closed, still above. Path super, no problem through Žrelo) to Kranjska koča on Ledine then climbing path (Rudijeva vertikala) to top of Velika Baba. Descent via ridge or other Babas to Jenkova planina then to car. Altogether good 5 hours hiking/climbing. Excellent tour, recommend to all with some climbing experience and fitness.

What conditions on Rudijeva vertikala (protection, cables, snow) to Velika baba?

On the approach through Žrelo there's definitely a snowfield that I had in summer three years ago. Crampons were needed at least back then. The same snowfield could complicate the approach to the Slovenian side too.

Yesterday on this beautiful mountain. Protection both on the Slovenian to Ledine and on the climbing path to the summit impeccable. Path through Žrelo closed though.
