Has anyone been to Velika Planina recently? Is it already suitable for picking pine and spruce tips or do we need to wait a bit more?

Our friend, alpine shepherd Peter, today in shepherd settlement Velika Planina, measured 20 cm of snow in front of the hut!...

I'm asking again, does anyone know the current status regarding pine tips on Velika Planina? Are they a suitable size for picking this weekend? Thanks for the reply.

Last Sunday two picked them. I have a question - are pine tips used the same as spruce??? From home I know only spruce tips and their use...

Thanks! Yes, the use is the same. They supposedly have a slightly different (more intense) taste and are a bit more healing. @sla, I have another question. Which part of Velika Planina has the most and which trailhead has the least walking to get there? For now due to an operation I still can't walk much and I'll be happy to shorten the arduous search a bit.

@jezičnik, most bilberries are on Gradišče, that's the highest part of Velika Planina.

The gondola runs every full hour every day. To the top of Gradišče it's still quite a steep climb afterwards. I went past sv. Primož - that's not exactly the shortest variant. How far you can drive with a car from the direction of Kranjski Rak, I don't know, because there are apparently some road closures (which of course don't apply to everyone...). But from that side there's the least elevation difference.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just go by gondola. Otherwise, in the worst case, I still have the chairlift (at least the website says it runs from Friday to Sunday - is that true?).

Today I was on Velika pl. or rather on Gradišče and there are no tips yet ....You can drive by car to Ušivec and then go along the not too steep slope across the pasture, about an hour of moderate walking...I went from Stahovica and only about halfway there are spruce tips for picking, bilberries even later...I make them with honey, instead of sugar, excellent and healthy syrup...

Today officially on Velika pl. Path from Kr. Rak bp. It's been a long time since I was in these parts, I noticed a Private sign on the parking lot. Can't park there anymore?

Yesterday, 03.08.2013, 46 hikers from PD Ožbalt ob Dravi-Kapla na Kozjaku climbed up to the wonderful Velika Planina. Just like last year (last year we climbed to the planina on June 24), the starting point of the hike was also this time at Rakovih Ravneh, from where it is an hour and a half walk to Velika Planina. We had a slightly longer stop at Domžalski Dom on Mali Planina. At noon we continued towards the chapel of Marija Snežna, where a group photo followed. From the planina we descended to the idyllic valley Dol, where we rested a bit and refreshed ourselves, then we had another good hour of walking on gravel to the bus. We then had a short stop at Kranjski Rak, then the drive home via the Črnivec Pass (902 m) followed. It was a super hike or rather one could say a walk across the planina; it was only too hot, even at 1600 m it was hellishly hot. Poor cows, their milk will boil. But to not whine so much, for interest I will add that yesterday we also had a snowball fight, yes you read right, we HAD A SNOWBALL FIGHT, more precisely in the cave or hole called Vetrnica. Then the decision falls - let's go to Velika Planina, since we only know it in winter gear. Well, let's go - yes, but a bit earlier, say at 2 a.m. from home, to greet the sunrise. Gorgeoussss, really no regret for the early rising, even though it's only 1666 m a.s.l.

Yes, our planina is really beautiful and special. The tough and persistent shepherds and their livestock give it a special mark. Despite the troubles they get from the municipal authorities, they still drive their livestock to pasture every year. The mayor is bothered by a few meters of concrete on the steep path, which every rain turns into a ditch. But the crumbling shack of the ski lift at the top of Pleč does not bother him. The wooden remains of it lie scattered across the pasture far around. Obviously, the newly growing wooden shack just before Planina Konjščica does not bother him either. Let him deal with those problems, but the shepherds, of whom there are fewer every year, let him finally leave them alone. The planina comes alive with their arrival and if there are no more, the planina will lose its charm!

Most park at the junction to Kisovec or a bit lower, right after the bend there's already more snow and harder to drive.

Nice sunny day lured us towards the plateau, goal was Gradišče but due to strong wind and snowdrifts we abandoned the plan and ended up at Domžale Lodge... Nice, enjoyable, cheerful it was.... winter has its charms
