Velika Planina

I'm quite often on Velika Planina and practically every time I meet a few gents over 80 who hike there right from below. One of them I usually meet every time when returning past Primož and last year he already walked noticeably hard. But he tries and reaches the top. Another from the group boasted about a month ago that he was on Velika Planina every day of the year except around four days. A year ago I met two older ladies who walked really slowly and with lots of trouble. Haven't seen them for a long time. They usually parked some Fiat right at the branch from the gravel road to Primož.

Every time I see these people, I'd love to congratulate them on their persistence. Really, hats off and full respect.

So I find it funny that some "fit grandpas" complain about parking at higher lots.

Those two elderly are Primož legends, they go up every day no matter the conditions nasmeh

Today PD Škofja Loka guides took a retirees group to Velika planina. Drove to guesthouse in Kranjski Rak. From there on road soon left for left on fairly steep path back to road before parking. Parking 7 euros for cars. Surprisingly quite empty. Planina full of hikers. Most come by gondola. Behind parking turns left again rocky path to first planina -Gojska planina. Further path over whole Velika planina pure pleasure. Of course up to Gradišče sat before chapel. No ad for hut cuz all excellent.
Greetings from Kranjska Raka.1

Piebald cattle. The bottom and top must be white. At least that's what my pensioners explained to me.10
Such huts are characteristic of the entire Velika planina.11

Down to the chapel - abandoned drag lift.15
Chapel of Our Lady of the Snow. During World War II it was burned down like almost all shepherd huts.16
At the Domžale hut.17
Back to the starting point - unique toilet at the paid parking lot. Its use is probably included in the parking fee.18

Branko, you're a very popular and wanted mountain guide. Leading and cheering such a big group of hikers really isn't child's play. PD Škofja Loka guides and retirees group - good luck! nasmeh

There were four of us. Two have only A category for leading, the other two A, B and D. I'm mainly the last one in this group - that's why I can take more photos and catch more flowers.

The difference is that a mountain guide is considered a profession and guiding is paid. Mountain guides also have different licenses. Alpine guides work in alpine associations and guiding is not paid and is on a voluntary basis. You do get minimal daily rates for guiding, but reconnaissance tours you do completely for free. And think how much I spend on reconnaissance in Italy or Austria. I do this because I love mountains and of course explore alpine flora-flowers.

As far as I know, the number of PZS guides (VPZS) decreases every year.
If you know "others", let me know their phone numbers at ZS. In our PD we would gladly accept them. At least 5.
Best regards.

Julius, you're right. In my generation from five years ago, a quarter apparently didn't even do those tours that you have to do for registration confirmation. At least I don't find them on the PZS guides list. Otherwise, most societies note that they can't get young people for mountain guides, at least that's the case in Tržič and elsewhere. Young guys prefer to go among alpinists.

gams 44, your sharp response to our favorite mountain guide from Škofja Loka, Branko Velkavrh, surprised us a bit and put us in a bad mood. We all know that mountain guides are in shortage. He is an enthusiast and does all this for free. I hope you didn't get out of bed on the wrong side on this holiday. nasmeh

The snow has melted, so in the morning in summer gear quickly to Lidija (Jarški dom). From thick fog to warm sun. Air you could cut, but still from Vegrad to Jarški I didn't see a living soul (like in the spring 'covid term'). No cows anymore, no summer hustle either, two beers and back to the valley.nasmeh
The cows were probably transported down with tractors, since I didn't notice a single 'cowpat' on the whole path.
A bit of whiteness only in permanently shaded spots.1

Today I also wandered around Velika Planina and vicinity, namely like this: Jelšev konfin, Jarški dom on MP, Gradišče, Zeleni rob, Chapel of Mary of the Snow, Črnuški dom and Jelšev konfin.
Weather initially mostly clear, later cloudy, appropriately cold and almost no wind. The path is snowy in some parts, but BP. Lots of visitors.
I like the simplicity of paying the parking fee by SMS (last two pictures). I don't like the price velik nasmeh

Thanks to both for writing the conditions on the path. nasmeh Still we decided to postpone the path over Rigelj to next year when it will be dry all the way.

Today though Krivčevo - Planina Kisovec - Mala Planina along the edge - Gradišče - chapel of Mary of the Snow - Gojška Planina - Jelšev Konfin - Krivčevo.

First time to Velika Planina from Krivčevo. Parking lot in front of Gostilna Jurček full of cars, some also in front of the school on the opposite side of the road. In the first part the path leads in steep switchbacks through the forest. On the first pasture past the hunting hut and abandoned farm and cottage. Just a few meters higher we turned towards Planina Kisovec.

Path to Planina Kisovec poorly trodden and solitary, with quite some fallen trees that don't obstruct walking. No one on the pasture, no cars anywhere as parking is prohibited.

Then past the cheese dairy on the marked path uphill and soon we were on Mala Planina. We turned towards the edge and followed it almost to Gradišče. Nice views on the way, fog lingered long in the valley, clouds of various shapes in the sky. nasmeh In this part again no one on the path, down on the "highway" lots of people.

The edge was completely dry, we caught very nice views of the highest KSA, then it started clouding over. We stopped a bit on the snowy "platform" behind the summit, then descended on snow towards the chapel, past Domžalski Dom and to Gojška Planina, where we joined the path to Jelšev Konfin and onwards to the start. In the last part the path well trodden and nicely marked. Unlike the pasture, here we met only a few hikers.

Very nice path, pleasant to walk. Morning also quite some sun. Real pleasure stepping on snow. Incredibly warm and no wind. nasmeh
The path is very well marked from the start.1
Steeply into the forest above the village of Krivčevo - no mercy at all. :)2
First mountain pasture with a hunting hut.3
Just a little further a larger building (Podkrajnik farm). Above it an autumn forest in vivid colors.4
Kisovec pasture. Nobody anywhere. Peace and sun.5
Shrine on Kisovec pasture.6
Thick fog in the valley. It lingered for a long time.7
First snow on Mali planina. Locally slightly icy. Completely unproblematic for hiking.8
Towards Krvavec. I had to hurry with the photos because the clouds were moving fast too. :)9
10
Wonderful KSA. Deeply snow-covered.11
Wonderful views.12
Right along the wire fence ahead. The path is bare and well-trodden.13
Veliki stan. Behind it Rogatec and Lepenatka, with a tall smoke plume rising between them.14
Interesting sculptures by nature.15
Time for a snack and view towards Gradišče - wrapped in fog and clouds.16
Views from the top, from Gradišče to Velika planina. We are rarely here in the snow. It's really nice!17
And view of the peak just a few meters ahead - from the snow plateau.18
Us two. This year we got mini tripods, great for summit souvenir photos. :)19
Beautifully arranged village. We go through it.20
This one was renovated this year. It has a little spruce on the roof too.21
Signposts on the pasture very distinctive, new. Commendable.22
One of many ponds on the mountain pasture.23
Towards the chapel.24
It's nice here. Always...25
A somewhat wetter passage. :)26
Already below Domžalski dom. Again something interesting rocky.27
Another pond on Mala planina.28
Gojska planina in the sun.29
Signposts on Gojška planina. One also points to Krivčevo.30
At Jelšev konfin - personally placed. It says this section of the path to Velika planina is called Children's mountain path.31
