At the monument in Jezerska valley there's one car, I seem to know the owner, he's from Rabolj. I drive a bit further. At the sharp bend by the barrier I park, really surprised how nicely snow-covered the road is. Immediately I put on skis and in the beautiful morning glide towards Viška planina. The track is made, mostly by snowshoers. Upon arriving at Viška planina I'm always overwhelmed again by the stunning view of the Vis group, how mighty and beautiful it is. At the same time the sun greets me, peeking over the saddle between Little and Big Snowy Peak on the other side of the valley. The aforementioned Italian is at the lower cable car station, obviously watching chamois in the meadows, so he doesn't even greet back. I continue across the pasture. The snow base is hard, over it about 25-30 cm of dry, powdery snow. I go along the summer path towards Kapna stena. Conditions excellent, so I walk with skis, only right under Beljaški tower I take them off for a few meters and carefully cross the exposed spot. I check the most snow-filled passages up under Vis, I've already chosen the route anyway. Under some wall I leave the skis and gear up for the ascent. First a short gully, feel is good, if it continues like this, it'll be great. Edges are wind-blown, some hard crust and old snow, good combo, just not sinking too deep. I go straight up. Conditions really good, follows a snowy-rocky step which I overcome quickly, then another short gully and I'm at the first fixed cables. Also there it goes nicely, then a bit around the edge and I'm under the preduh. As I see it's not wind-filled and the path ahead is open. If luck favors me, the summit is mine. Again I follow the summer path and use some cables sticking out of the snow. Meanwhile it clouds over, snow starts flying, wind picks up. Just like in the script. If it were sunny, I wouldn't feel real winter, but like this. Soon the beard starts freezing, wind carries snow around, I poke with the ice axe and the summit is closer. When I get almost under the summit, it starts clearing, still blowing strong, so carefully to the "madonna" and cross, so it doesn't blow me off the ridge. There at the cross surprisingly almost calm. I look down to Zajzera, towards Montaž, all peaks around, take some photos, then quickly down again. Although I know no one will go up tomorrow I choose another path for descent and leave the ski tracks untouched. That's right too, if only everyone did that . Down at the cables I descend more carefully of course, at the preduh I take a photo, then down to the skis. There a short break, drink some, and on skis. Crossing under Beljaški tower and Kapna stena on skis. From there I extend traverse right to the "channel" going down from under ŠPŠ. Inside soft crust, lower dry snow, so turns totally enjoyable and all the way to the pasture, then ju-hu-hu down the road to the car. Ascent to Vis in winter is considered alpinistic, full gear and sufficient knowledge required. Less experienced should go with a mountain guide.
