I don't know what history has to do with this, that it's a mountain trail and that it's open to the wider public in 2012 or today... For people who go to the mountains, this will probably be the primary information along with the conditions on it, and only then can they amateurishly inquire about its history. After all, history doesn't go to the mountains but people here and now on the trail, whose condition matters today and not 100 years ago...zavijanje z očmi

Since the predecessor trail description is quite lacking or says nothing about key difficulties, allow me to describe the current conditions on this trail. Up to Žabniška krnica of course no problems. When I head under Mali Viš I notice high up on the snowfield a person, yes there's still a snowfield and ice at the entry, and a short crack that can be bypassed. Obviously he went too high, I direct him back down. Here and there he slips a bit, a stone flies off the partially covered snowfield, but he finds the traverse and heads to the path in the wall. I below find the red dot, already in the lower part I cross the snowfield and ice covered with scree and right by the red dot I climb straight up, poor II. Higher I reach the marked path and around it, then through the chimney where there are still some wooden pegs up. Soon I catch up with the guy ahead. He says he's Filip from Beljak, we ascend together. Soon higher in the gully we encounter a real landslide, obviously a fresh rockfall, big rocks, scree, dust in the gully. At one point a larger rock blocked the old passage so you have to bypass the spot on the right over smoothed stones. About 30 meters higher is the once hardest spot, now nicely secured and causes no problems, nor in the continuation. Soon we're on Božje police, a bit along them to the right, then on faded marks ahead. Follows some easier climbing, then somewhat monotonous ascent on the slope to the summit. I descended the normal route to the south side, below branched left to trail A. Goitan, for Mala špica I went on the north side and down to Trbiška škrbina. Since the old passage to Mrzla voda has been closed for some years, I went a bit lower, then on the new bypass which is nicely secured up and down to the shredded scree, below caught the trail to Žabniška škrbina and over it to Rifugio Pellarini and to the valley. The once built, secured and marked Gola Nord-Est trail has been abandoned for many years. A few years ago guides did install some bolts and cable on the difficult passage in the central gully part, also placed expansion bolts with rings in several places for belaying and possible rappels. The trail itself is not numbered on Tabacco 019 map, but drawn and next to it an alpinist is drawn, meaning it's an alpinistic ascent. In Italy there are dozens such trails, some are real gems for experienced mountaineers, so any comment on poor maintenance or even neglect is completely unnecessary.

As for the alpinist on Tabacco maps, as far as I remember, the alpinist is drawn next to every climbing trail, maintained or not. I don't know what the legend says about it. Unfortunately I don't have any of those maps at home, I'll remember to check when I go to the library next time.
The other thing mentioned above is that it's actually not just about Gola NE. In the upper posts several other trails were mentioned, which are numbered and in the CAI trail network, but despite that they are either abandoned or very poorly maintained (let me add one more - Rio degli uccelli in Karnics - this one is now apparently open, but it took them about 10 years to restore it). So - I'm not blaming anyone, but that trail maintenance on the Italian side is so super organized and efficient is simply not true.

Igor, thanks for supplementing my post and congrats on the ascent and nice tour.nasmeh We won't argue much more, right...mežikanje Well at least I hope so, because as was said somewhere, mountaineers or hikers basically aren't such people... Let's respect each other and it will be fine!
Best regards!

our markers would solve this dilemma more elegantly and unequivocally. At the start of the trail just hang a sign that the trail is impassable, everyone who ventures into it knows what to expect. Not some prior study of history and asking locals. Not everyone has the chance to sit with them over beer and discuss the peculiarities of each of their trails.

In a way it's really strange that e.g. CAI 649 and GOLA NE are still drawn as marked or maintained, although they've been practically abandoned for some years, but still passable (well the passage under Piparji more or less no longer - there are signs at all starts warning about it), while e.g. CAI 619, 655, 651, which haven't been maintained for more than a decade either, are therefore not marked on any Tabacco maps.
climber marked by the trail means it's a very difficult marked trail with climbing sections - i.e. trails like Norina, Via Amalia, Anita Goitan etc...

klm, so you have some "official" info from one of the CAI sections that 649 is actually abandoned and won't be restored anymore? Because I at least online get no answer about it, whether and when they will tackle it.
Since I've mentioned this trail to quite a few colleagues like "there's an interesting thing over there, definitely worth going, but let's wait until they finally fix it". So do you have info that such waiting is in vain and it won't be restored at all? Thanks for any answer.
oh, if Igor knows anything about it, I recommend myself also for his answer mežikanje

Maybe Alessio, who is the first marker on Trbiž, will provide some new info. But one has to know that mountain trails are not maintained by companies, but volunteers, well in Italy only mountain guides are responsible for installing protections. Depending on numerous injuries, some trails come first, others later, some never, because it's no longer sensible to maintain them due to constant rockfalls.

One source of info is the website www.sentiericai-fvg.it
then there are also websites of CAI sections that care for individual trails. Due to professional activities I have to stay current with such news.
As can be seen, CAI 649 is no longer on this list, otherwise at all starts it says "sentieri 649 inagibile" i.e. "impassable"

Route from Pellarini Hut (1499m).
Picture for orientation. Red shows current secured route. Blue marked path in very poor condition, made when glacier was approx. tens of meters higher.

On Saturday we went to Viš via Anita Goitan trail from Corsira. On the trail completely flawless protections - just like on all Italian trails (loose cable, large distance between bolts). Some spots (gullies or chimneys) are quite demanding, especially since they are on descents. Views wonderful and at the same time wild - really unique. View from the top was unique. At the top a large majority of Slovenes.

From Koštrun Spires we continued today to Viš. From Mojzes Saddle we ascended towards the summit via Anita Goitan path. On the way there's one snowfield, which can be bypassed along the ledge above the snow. Today little visitors on the summit, only one ahead of us. Since the weather held up, on descent we decided to extend the route via Anita Goitan path to Trbiška Saddle. No regrets, as it's routed among wild ledges and towers.
Followed by descent to Corsi Hut, then to Viš Pasture and a bit arduous road to the valley. Another nice day. Lp

From parking No.2 in Zajzera we warmed up along path 616 to Pellarini hut, then towards Nabojsova škrbina and at Gola sign DID NOT turn left to the ledge of Mali Viš. This leads to narrow steep chimney equipped with cables, jammed wooden logs aid the ascent. After rugged terrain we climbed to ridge of Mali Viš where couloir starts. Equipped with fixed protections at key spots, where none are present, rock movement control is needed, scrambling up to II. After gully exit we followed ledge called Božje police. After a good 50 m we left them and continued along rocky section to under normal Viš route. Joined it and in a couple of minutes stood on summit. Descended towards Corsi hut, past Viška planina to Jezersko valley.

Whoever stayed in the valley on Saturday missed a lot, as there aren't many opportunities in the year for exceptional views like those offered that day. Saturday via Viš Pasture and Corsi Hut was hot too, sweat pouring from the head more than often in summer. Butterflies flying on summit. Zigzag path uninteresting, but views impressive from pasture onwards. Higher up nothing special, some snow towards top, no problems. But some of many junctions poorly marked, unclear, faded inscriptions on rocks, had to think logically and search for red dots a lot.
Not many hikers. Views paid off everything. Slovenian beer rules in Corsi Hut. Fog boundary around 1800m, nice to see how far the Adriatic influence reached. Dolomites as on the palm of the hand 120km away, complete High and Low Tauern, east clear home mountains, south our end and in Italy white sea.
Pics follow.
Good luck and safe steps!

On Saturday 5.7 on Viš. Weather nice, views wonderful! Path excellently marked, fixed protections in great condition. Had crampons and ice axe but didn't need them, very little snow patches easy to bypass. On return stopped for deserved beer in open Corsi hut. One of the nicer tours for me nasmeh
