On Sunday we decided on the ascent to mighty Viš. Start along the winding road to Viška planina, then to Corsi hut and normal route to summit. The whole path amid wonderful views was pure pleasure. No special features on the path, but I would emphasize that a large number of junctions, which are poorly and inaccurately marked, confuse many hikers. Description on Hribi.net is not accurate nor are the maps.

Road to Viška planina still dry. Continue under Koštrunove špice and cross under Kapna stena towards Corsi hut.

Above hut turn up to Viš. Follow marked path, not much snow, partly crusted, shady powdery. At branch to direct route gear up. Then easy, just little snow under preduh, few meters on dry rock. Behind preduh snow firmish, higher partly icy. Full focus to summit. Little wind, not too cold.

At summit few shots and back ascent route.

Winter approach to Viš needs full summer route knowledge. Area avalanche prone, ascent safe only in suitable conditions assessed ongoing. Full winter gear needed.

I'm going to try, can still turn back if it doesn't work.

Zajzera is so beautiful now that I'd just stand and watch, listen to birdsong, but had to push quickly. Soon after Pellarini hut turn off the path. Like going my own way, run into small herd of chamois and already on first snowfields under Mali Viš. Snow is very comfortable for walking, so quickly at traverse ledge, which is completely dry, first part of gully also dry. Then snowfields begin, need crampons and ice axe. In between also scramble on dry rock.
First problem is transition from snow to secured part, but it goes, although higher part of cable torn, continue on snowfield and soon reach my most annoying spot, where you descend along cable into small basin. Follows small showering and already reach Božje police.

Continuation is easier, although among scree still plenty of snowfields.

At top meet group from LJ, descend together to Škrbina Zadnje špranje. I then go to Mojzesov žleb, which at top lacks some snow, lower still sufficiently snowy, then to Špranjo, long descent to Zajzera and most annoying part along dry streambed to car at parking no. 2.

already from afar it was possible to see that there was still a lot of snow in the gully, especially in the upper part

in the first chimney fewer and fewer wooden pegs, the steel cable however in good condition

part of the secured section is already dug out, in between of course a hole

in places abundantly snow-covered, with equipment no problems

when the deber widens still long snow patches

also on southern slopes there are still snow patches

I descend through Mojzesov žleb to Špranjo and on to Zajzero

anyone who missed skiing Žleb Hude police this year can do it next year

Hi,

I'm interested in the current snow conditions on Viš? In the next few days I'd go on the Century Path. I have no crampons and if there's snow I feel very unsafe. Please advise zmeden

On Friday I was on Viš. To Viš pasture from monument along road, to Corsi hut via German path, to Viš via direct which is snow-free, back to Corsi hut and Viš pasture via right path. Hut has super location and great view.

Some drive to Viš pasture, barrier is up, no-traffic sign at barrier stands nasmeh

Regarding snowfield to notch Alta di Rio Bianco (centenary path): lingers late in summer, surely whole July. Though many go up without gear, not safest. For crossing such snowfields 6-point crampons enough, fit any boot and fairly cheap. Used ice axe got under 50 eur. Get gear and enjoy mountains nasmeh

Here 12-point crampons fit anywhere – even running shoes they don't resist.

We were on Viš and not even a trace of snow velik nasmeh

Afternoon on Wednesday, 1.7., we started from Sella Nevea to Rif. Corsi (path 625), overnighted and went to Viš 2.7. (path 627). Same day we also went on the Germans' path and observed chamois and caves and postwar remains around Corsi... mežikanje

Then we overnighted another night and next morning 3.7. took the centenary path through the tunnel further to bivak Gorizzia to Rif. Brunner and down to the road. To Sella Nevea we hitchhiked and got to the car.
The weather was wonderful, warm, cloudless. Rif. Corsi has a phenomenal location, the manager is very friendly, food fantastic.
The centenary path we did without self-securing with helmets and light. At 2 spots it would really be good to have protections... for such a feat we'll have them next time, recommend to others too. cool

This Mary up there seemed bigger to me from net photos, but it's not :-) less than 1m :)

Koštrun peaks and Viš from Rabeljska (Jezerska valley) over Viš pasture past Guido Corsi hut and over Notch of Last Gap.

This part of western Julians always enchants me, mountains right of Viš with hard access, Koštrun peaks with historical touch and cavern remains from WWI.
Path to Viš from Corsi hut nothing special, this year all well marked - renovated blazes, also further to Škrbina Zadnje špranje (Mojzes notch) and Anita Goitan, bit less to Koštrun peaks but still good followable.
Our plan was initially to climb also western top of Koštrun Spikes but lacked will and tech gear; but question: is that second top accessible at all?

the path is demanding further on, somewhat exposed but not too difficult

after the initial rocky step in the second part until arrival at the ridge it runs over steep green grass

arrival at the summit ridge among remains of former shooting trenches

uff what an observation post just how did they build that back then

view from the upper tunnel to the west side to the other summit

demanding western summit ... is there an easier approach to it (without all these technical aids)

our gaze already wanders to the neighboring Viš

after a shorter secured section of the Anita Goitan path from the Zadnje Špranje saddle to Viš

Viš, view from the right summit to the left one, where there is a statue of Mary, a cross and also the logbook

Viš is much less pierced than Koštrun's peaks

all signs and markings below Viš (above koča Corsi) have been renewed this year and are well marked

Rabeljsko jezero is excellent for refreshment at this time and in this heat, there are also many swimmers

Jezerska valley - Viš pasture - below Kapna wall - Giorgio Cavalieri path - Trbiška notch - sent. A. Goitan - Viš - Škrbina zadnje špranje - Corsi hut - Jezerska valley. No special features except on descent below Mala špica pulled peg, somehow tied cable with piece of auxiliary rope so it serves purpose.
