On Easter Monday my colleague and I used the last day of the winter season and climbed Vogel (1923 m), first with skis, then with crampons and ice axe. On Planina Zadnji Vogel touring skiers (on cross-country skis) quickly 'overtook' us, climbing surprisingly confidently on hard snow towards the saddle right of the ridge. That day hikers probably wouldn't have sunk much either. Descent right from the top wasn't for everyone, further on super conditions. We left the approach route after 100 vm to the left, then left of Zadnji Vogel (didn't see the cable car) and soon joined Žagarjev graben. short documentary

That path marked on some maps turns left into the valley a bit before the hunting hut. Soon it bites right into the steep slope. You can really only guess this path now. Only here and there you still find some usable section. The path you walked yesterday is the hunting path to the plains under Šija and Vrh dlani. This path was dug years ago by workers from southern republics. Hunters of state hunting grounds use it. But there is also another more hidden path that smugglers (contrabandists) used during the Italian occupation. Descriptions of these places were collected by Peter Podgornik on the Primorske stene website.

Yes more to the left, in the steep forest the path is marked. You need to turn left before the hunting hut, somewhere at the junction with the path to Razor planina. In picture 10 you are on the hunting path....the rest I can't claim. The hunting path ends, or is no longer visible on the grass under Šija (pictures 18 and 19). The smugglers' path isn't marked. For that path you go up the valley towards Vrh nad Mernikom (picture 6). In the headwall under this peak, it turns right into the gully and leads us to the place where you joined the SPP. But these are beautiful and solitary places. During hunting season hikers are not welcome there. In memory of some incident, a route named Sebastjanova rampa was climbed in the wall of Šija .

I did this tour in November 2020 (during the strictest lockdown to houses ...). The tour is wonderful and I managed to find it quite well (maybe just lucky). It's described in Habjan's guide, and online there's also this: https://www.summitpost.org/vratca-from-kneza-valley/385442 In short, my experiences are as follows: to Planina Prodi the path can be found quite well. The point is that it was once bare and later (probably) forested with conifers. So there you can follow the path nicely, but behind the planina in areas of old forests, mostly deciduous, it's much more erased. As far as I remember, behind the planina I first went close to that rocky gully (visible there), then right into the forest (forest entry visible, then you enter deciduous forest where the path is quite lost under fallen leaves), went right (away from Vratca - counterintuitive) and then at some point left (indistinct valley, maybe faint traces. On this section a large tree fell over the path, passage cleared with a motorbike. The path isn't even visible, but when you see that cleared passage, it's clear you're roughly right). Through this forest more or less to the end, before the terrain steepens, then hit the passage left back towards the rocky gully. This right-left passage through the forest is really hard to spot and maybe I was lucky to hit it. Further I followed the path quite well over grass, scree and short forested parts. Only when you reach those vast meadows under Vratca, the thing got lost or I couldn't follow it anymore. There you go more by nose, the saddle is visible anyway. To me it seemed easier not to go up too quickly, but stay a bit lower until approaching the saddle entrance and only then up. But everyone find the easiest passage by feel. In any case steep grass and you don't want to be there when wet. To Vogel summit then straight along the ridge (one II spot, other easier). More fun and direct than around on markers. To me this tour seemed wonderful. Probably better for autumn, then highly recommended.

Thanks both for additional info. Right on this portal we got some useful tips. Where the paths go. At least approximately, to know the direction and where. Because higher up where you're in grass and over scree, you have to assess where it's possible to go. We were careful not to go too high, because then it would be harder to descend to the path. And the slope is more serious too. When you're used to pathless terrain it's not that hard. Really beautiful solitary and remote areas.
