On Easter Monday my colleague and I used the last day of the winter season and climbed Vogel (1923 m), first with skis, then with crampons and ice axe. On Planina Zadnji Vogel touring skiers (on cross-country skis) quickly 'overtook' us, climbing surprisingly confidently on hard snow towards the saddle right of the ridge. That day hikers probably wouldn't have sunk much either.
Descent right from the top wasn't for everyone, further on super conditions. We left the approach route after 100 vm to the left, then left of Zadnji Vogel (didn't see the cable car) and soon joined Žagarjev graben.

10.6.2022. Plan was to go elsewhere, but we decided for a pathless tour all the way to the junction for Vogel. From Kneške Ravne. Once there was a path. It's also marked on some maps. But time has done its thing. It's gone. We went more by feel. Checked the terrain. Quite steep slope. Crossed some scree. Then on the marked path to Vogel. Wind was quite strong yesterday. Gusts on the ridge. Met quite a few foreign hikers. I'd say some of them got cold, as they weren't dressed for lower temperatures. Continued to Žabijski Kuk. Wind had a party there too. Found at least a bit sheltered spot for a snack and descended to Planina Podkuk. Then for a while on path E 7 to the junction for Kneške Ravne. Junction is poorly visible. And after ten hours of walking, some breaks and searching passages on pathless terrain, arrived at start in Kneške Ravne. No rain. Great views. Sea was visible too. It was 16km and 1580 elevation gain. Ticks are still active on paths. Renato, who went first, had the most. For me and Marjan fewer left. nasmeh

That path marked on some maps turns left into the valley a bit before the hunting hut. Soon it bites right into the steep slope. You can really only guess this path now. Only here and there you still find some usable section.
The path you walked yesterday is the hunting path to the plains under Šija and Vrh dlani. This path was dug years ago by workers from southern republics. Hunters of state hunting grounds use it. But there is also another more hidden path that smugglers (contrabandists) used during the Italian occupation.
Descriptions of these places were collected by Peter Podgornik on the Primorske stene website.

So we missed it already at the hut. When we were still on that traceable hunting path. We thought it was the smugglers' path. Then it disappeared. I remember Marijan saying the path is marked much further left than we went. But it's no longer visible. We went our own way across that slope all the way to the saddle. When you search for the first time. You find it too. nasmeh
There was no longer any path or trace.1
As a trail follower, one knows neither where nor how.2

Yes more to the left, in the steep forest the path is marked. You need to turn left before the hunting hut, somewhere at the junction with the path to Razor planina. In picture 10 you are on the hunting path....the rest I can't claim. The hunting path ends, or is no longer visible on the grass under Šija (pictures 18 and 19). The smugglers' path isn't marked. For that path you go up the valley towards Vrh nad Mernikom (picture 6). In the headwall under this peak, it turns right into the gully and leads us to the place where you joined the SPP.
But these are beautiful and solitary places. During hunting season hikers are not welcome there. In memory of some incident, a route named Sebastjanova rampa was climbed in the wall of Šijanasmeh.

I did this tour in November 2020 (during the strictest lockdown to houses ...). The tour is wonderful and I managed to find it quite well (maybe just lucky). It's described in Habjan's guide, and online there's also this:
https://www.summitpost.org/vratca-from-kneza-valley/385442
In short, my experiences are as follows: to Planina Prodi the path can be found quite well. The point is that it was once bare and later (probably) forested with conifers. So there you can follow the path nicely, but behind the planina in areas of old forests, mostly deciduous, it's much more erased. As far as I remember, behind the planina I first went close to that rocky gully (visible there), then right into the forest (forest entry visible, then you enter deciduous forest where the path is quite lost under fallen leaves), went right (away from Vratca - counterintuitive) and then at some point left (indistinct valley, maybe faint traces. On this section a large tree fell over the path, passage cleared with a motorbike. The path isn't even visible, but when you see that cleared passage, it's clear you're roughly right). Through this forest more or less to the end, before the terrain steepens, then hit the passage left back towards the rocky gully. This right-left passage through the forest is really hard to spot and maybe I was lucky to hit it. Further I followed the path quite well over grass, scree and short forested parts. Only when you reach those vast meadows under Vratca, the thing got lost or I couldn't follow it anymore. There you go more by nose, the saddle is visible anyway. To me it seemed easier not to go up too quickly, but stay a bit lower until approaching the saddle entrance and only then up. But everyone find the easiest passage by feel. In any case steep grass and you don't want to be there when wet.
To Vogel summit then straight along the ridge (one II spot, other easier). More fun and direct than around on markers.
To me this tour seemed wonderful. Probably better for autumn, then highly recommended.

Thanks both for additional info. Right on this portal we got some useful tips. Where the paths go. At least approximately, to know the direction and where. Because higher up where you're in grass and over scree, you have to assess where it's possible to go. We were careful not to go too high, because then it would be harder to descend to the path. And the slope is more serious too. When you're used to pathless terrain it's not that hard. Really beautiful solitary and remote areas. nasmeh

On Friday the sixth of January we finally got a sunny day. When you escape the valley grayness the world seems nicer. And we weren't alone on the path. Another hiker with a dog was on the way. And with pleasant chat on descent the day was wonderful. nasmeh Until it snows again the track is made.

Kneške Ravne, off-trail, Vogel. At the junction left to pl. Razor, after 10 min on the flat go right, visible path to hunting observatory. Then lost it due to avalanches, off-trail to saddle between Žabiški K. and Vogel and higher under bushes briefly found faint cross path, it soon vanishes or had to leave anyway. Up right of gully with visible grass, with ice axe. Snow only on Vogel ridge. Light rain started, didn't stay long on top. Used crampons back too. Lower explored that cross path, goes towards Rodica then soon zig-zag down till lost it... descent easy through beech forest.

Vogel yesterday. With views and almost no wind. From Raven we went. Two hikers overtook us. No others. Warm, no gloves needed at all. Finally winter leaving. Bohinj side still lots of snow. Didn't choose Globoko saddle. Descended past sign. Up off-trail and footprints where others went previous days. Ridge still some snow melting. Summit almost bare.

Not current conditions, but maybe idea for next trip...

End Oct 2022 continued traverse starting Tolmin (public transport to Tolmin, slept in hostel there). 5am start from hostel, continued to Žabče village. Reached first sign to hut on planina Razor. Then zig-zag up to planina Lom on nice firm forest path (Tolmin-Lom 2:15), then macadam to planina Kuk (Lom-Kuk 0:25), beautiful sunrise greeted. Nice road to Planina Razor hut, autumn leaves cover - wonderful (Kuk-hut 0:45). Hut closed end Oct, but tea and breakfast in nice winter room.
Signs from hut to Vogel. Autumn mountains beautiful with solitude bonus. Hut to Vogel summit under 2 hours.

Continued to Črni prst and Petrov Brdo, first day end.

Hope idea for weekend stage! nasmeh

On Vogel (25.01.2024) from Tolminskih Raven. We chose the longer path to Planina Razor. Not much snow there. We didn't know the conditions. To the sign for Vogel and Globoko it was trampled. Also beyond Globoko pass there were footprints. For Vogel no more. We broke trail. The hiker behind us was happy for our tracks. He came to check if ski touring was possible. But most snow under the summit. Lower down too little. Since the winter path was known to us, no problems. In the last part to the top strong wind gusts, as forecast. Otherwise great day in the mountains' embrace. nasmeh

29.4.2024. It wasn't even a difficult decision. To go check how the path from Raven to Vogel looks. If we make it. To wherever we get. We took the shorter path. To Planina Razor it's dry. Further snow starts. At the junction for Sedlo Globoko we finally decide to continue. Wind cooled somewhat. Now conditions mixed. Path parts dry. Probably more each day. Walking went nicely all the way to the gully. Where we go straight up the slope to the sign. Getting warmer. Then to summit no more issues, as snow on ridge melting. Summit already almost dry. Below summit we snack. Since early, we take two hours for rest and views. We observe two paragliders flying near the summit. Getting warmer. Like summer. Descend to gully. Now snow softened, but no issues. Winter gear needed where necessary. Didn't meet almost anyone. Avalanches seem to have slid almost all previous days. It was a day when dreams become reality. With wind in hair.
