I've been curious for a long time how the Vršič road looks under snow, even more how Vršič looks with 2m snow blanket.
Yesterday (20.2.) I set off from the Trenta side to Vršič and Vrh Vršiča.
This will probably be useful for visitors from the Trenta side - the road is milled very high up to 1500 m. There is a sign at 900 m about traffic ban. But to Šupca it's "blown to zero". Further just a few icy spots.. Yeah, yeah, the "Primorska" rotary plow was diligent velik nasmeh
It was a beautiful day, with a fitting crowd. The top destination for "tourers" was Šitna glava.
4 skiers with a dog even reached Mali Mojstrovka. It would be interesting to hear their impressions of the snow and sense of safety. They were back down before 11 a.m. anyway...
A quick hop to Gorenjska on the first weekend of relaxed movement. Shame not to those heart-pulling places...
... and the sun greeted me.1

I also hopped to Vršič... Urbe inspired me to tackle Vršič by bike someday... In snow of course, that's what MTBs are for. For extreme conditions, not smooth asphalt. Tried renting a bike in Kranjska Gora, but they don't rent bikes in winter at all! Mistake. And winter is paradise for MTB! They don't get it...

Quite a few touring skiers. Although the Vršič road isn't really suitable for skiing. The surrounding peaks are more suitable.

Hribolaznik, why isn't it suitable for skiing?

Why isn't it suitable for skiing? At the top it's quite torn up, with some awkward passages, down the road it's hard compact snow and high risk of meeting someone on the way... That's why the descent on the Vršič road towards KG is a less interesting project, it's more about cautious slow skiing down... The road offers extremely poor visibility, the skier takes up almost the entire lane...

Have you already considered COVID measures? social distancing? velik nasmeh

I agree, there's no pleasure skiing on the road. nasmeh

On Tuesday with Styrian group to Vršič summit. Start from Koča na Gozdu, then at Tonka we turned to the old road so the path to the top didn't drag. Weather excellent, super sunny, warm, no wind, pure poetry. It went great too, snow was just soft enough, and on the road it went fine too, as la-ta is wide enough, while skiing on the road we didn't meet anyone anyway.
Hribolaznik, I can't agree with your explanation, we had no problems skiing down, we actually enjoyed it a lot velik nasmeh

What are the conditions for hikers, do you need snowshoes?

If you're planning to go by road or by track, you don't need them. Even otherwise terrain generally quite "packed". Was up yesterday. Regards

On Monday 09.08.21 I did a tour over Vršič. Up from Trenta side, down to Gorenjska side. Public transport that took me across first is great. Path from Trenta side is interesting, runs mostly through forest. Jump right to Vrh Vršiča was short, because it was quite windy, sun was already descending.
Sheep are still the main ones on Vršič.

Today on Vršič. Road normally drivable, quite a bit of traffic. From Koča na Gozdu first some turns on the road, in between many stops with wonderful views, then by Tonkina koča to the mule track. Initially the track was good, higher up it was completely lost due to windblown snow. Occasionally sinking in, up to 30 cm of new snow on the path. Then in the bend overlooking Erjavčeva koča the track was completely gone. We figured it was better to return to the car and so we did. Then by car to the parking at Erjavčeva koča and a walk to the ruins above Tičarjev dom. Occasionally strong wind, especially at the pass, otherwise real winter atmosphere, calm and sunny. nasmeh

For retirees, a pleasant hike on the old road to Vršič. Start at Tonkina koča, which is already closed. At this time all huts except Erjavčeva are closed; Erjavčeva is open all year. The path or road is nicely laid out in switchbacks. It was well hidden from shells from the Soča direction. In between, we even see remains of the upper station of the cargo cableway, which was used by Austro-Hungarian soldiers in WWI. After a good hour and a half we were at Poštarski dom. Then less than twenty minutes and we were at the top of Vršič. The views were magnificent. Then we descended past Tičarjev dom to the road. On the road there is an indescribable crowd. Along the road we descended on the destroyed pathlet to Erjavčeva koča. It seems this unmarked pathlet is not interesting for hikers. There our transport to the valley was waiting.

It is open all year. I don't know if they plow at least to it in winter when there is too much snow and the pass is closed.31
