In southern gullies I think there is not much snow, in the NE gully there might be. I recommend you wait until another two meters of snow fall! Tomaž

Both paths to Vrtača are trodden. (Yesterday AO Tržič was up there). The southern one more than the NE. Winter gear is obligatory, ice axe especially. I didn't need crampons, because the snow was slightly southern-exposed. Very warm and nice weather - no cloud.

Please take for such peaks a person experienced in winter ascents in such conditions as now. Snow on slopes up to 1m.

Yesterday with Janez we did the ascent on the Ljubelj-Zelenica-Suho ruševje-Zelenjak-Vrtača-Ljubelj route. From Ljubelj to Zelenica it's quite sad. High temperatures do their thing, from the mid station to Zelenica it's fine. From the hut to Suhega ruševja the path is fine, no sinking, snow for walking is super. For ski tourers there is too little in my opinion. From the top of Suhega ruševja to Zelenjak there is a bit of a dilemma, with crampons or without. Up it's fine, good steps have been made, which we also fixed, for descent we went backwards at some places. On the path snowed and bare sections alternate. Caution won't hurt. Entry into the Y gully and further up obligatory with crampons, helmet and ice axe, yes sometimes a stone flies from the wall. Snow is fine, no sinking, track made to the top. At the top of Vrtača of course completely different conditions. It was slightly windy, fantastic views, clear weather, from the west a bad weather front approaching was visible. Descent we did via the southern gully, which was already quite sun-exposed. For ascent via that gully a good track is made. If there is no snow and low temperatures, the snow on the southern side will disappear quickly, since we walked from the path junction to Stol among pure crusts. LP Andrej

As Joža already said, the path is mainly dry, only on the summit ridge you need to step on snow a few times. Otherwise, Vrtača is all in flowers. The chairlift to Zelenica should start running (on weekends) in mid-June.

After two weeks of rain, it was necessary to use this beautiful weekend for a visit to the mountains. We were deciding whether this way or that. The decision fell a little before seven, and we got out of the car at the 'former' border crossing Ljubelj. Ascent to Zelenica, where they built a new large nice hut. Further along the marked path to Vrtača, then hop behind the spruce to Suho Ruševje. At the bottom of the cirque, swarms of persistent flies chased us. At the two cairns, we turn towards the Vrtača ridge. The wind blew the flies away or they were scared of the steep gully that led us to Little Head. We use the nice patch of grass for a rest. Surprisingly, Zelenjak was better visited than Palec today. Across the meadow, we start climbing towards the summit. The wind does not subside, so despite the sunny day, we soon descend from the summit lower to shelter for a snack. We barely bite into the sandwiches when hungry mountain choughs gather around us. We share the snack and head to the valley. The sun mercilessly bakes the southern slopes, and as we retreat from the ascending 'columns', we are really glad that we will soon be in the cool little forest, while they still have a strenuous long ascent ahead. And an addition: if the hut at Zelenica was still empty at seven in the morning, at twelve we barely found a place to sit on the nearby meadow in the shade, because tourists occupied almost all the trees.

So, today Vrtača let herself be conquered in the morning extremely cold weather (windy, I think at least -15 degrees), via Zelenica of course. Access via gully demanding, caution needed, emphasis on descent. On top wonderful sunny weather with even better views. Indescribable thrill. No ice axe and crampons, don't go via gully. Enjoy.

Hello, after the last failed ascent on Vrtača, when "Siberian" wind froze my fingers (and more), on Saturday 10.01. I succeeded in ascending to the top. With a friend, whom I'll call FORMULA1 because she drove like crazy, we went from the Zelenica hut towards Vrtača, but right away to the ridge and along the ridge all the way to the top. The path is varied, trodden, here and there something flew past our heads, so helmet, ice axe and crampons are mandatory equipment. On the top a fairy tale, the view was wonderful, weather insanely sunny, just a little wind. Back via the gully right under the top, where shade does its thing, so caution is needed. It was super!!!

Hello, today I was on Vrtača and it was excellent! For skiing ideal conditions but those who think of hiking it's not suitable, because in the lower part to the clearing (when you come out of the forest) it sinks to the knees, so not super for hikers but excellent for ski tourers and nice view from the top Nice greetings to all

Has anyone been up there recently? What are the conditions, avalanche risk? Are crampons mandatory?

Oh, what's with you guys, I don't know, if going to Vrtača in winter, crampons and ice axe are anyway MANDATORY equipment regardless of conditions!
