Anže, the pictures are new, namely from Wednesday 21 May. Taken from neighboring Srednji vrh, which has relatively low elevation compared to Vrtača, but there are still two short but firm snow patches there too. On Vrtača there are of course far more, so winter gear is needed. Where the path goes is clearly visible on both pictures.

Correcting the date from Wednesday 19 May, same as from Garmont, just from different viewpoint

Maybe you know how Košuta (Veliki vrh) is, given the +/-100m height difference, is Košuta also in snow.

Mate, Veliki vrh I saw only from north side (path over Hajneževo sedlo). There are snowfields of course. You probably mean path from Kofce, but can't give answer for that. If you really want +2000m , read conditions for Stol and Storžič on this forum. Happy hiking wherever. LP

Path from Kofce was completely dry 14 days ago, snow from last week mostly melted too, so think ascent to Veliki vrh should be without problems with proper fitness.

Today (22 May) we headed to Vrtača via summer path. Started at 6am from Ljubelj and just before Zelenica hut rain caught us so we sheltered half an hour in front of (closed) hut (with one hiker we met again below summit and as it turned out later the only hiker we met that day). When rain eased headed to Vrtača. New snow from ~2000m, old snow still plenty on summit-flat ridge. Also two tongues of old snow (15m wide) to be careful on, before summit ridge and before last step to top. Summit windy, cold, foggy, sleet. Rain whole way, varying intensity. Snow walking ok, crampons ice axe in pack.

Today on Vrtača: pleasant, but above all too many visitors, which presents a great potential danger of falling rocks. I almost intercepted a shot rock...(approx 5 sec walk behind my back). Saw the same at least 2X more on ascent and descent.. So a special warning applies regarding triggering rocks and stones, as they constantly crumble underfoot, while there are two more under the path to the summit that cross the same slope. Good luck! heinz

Yes, I was also on Vrtača yesterday, but since I was early enough (start from Ljubelj at 5.45), I had no problems with anyone higher up triggering rocks on me. On the way back though, the summit was swarming with hikers. There were lots of them also on Stol and Begunjščica.

When attendance is almost massive, especially in spring and early summer, the warning regarding triggering applies. Surely it wouldn't be any better if everyone set off so diligently early like jery did. The crowd is precisely what poses the danger.

I was on Vrtača on 20.7.2010. You have to be quite careful not to trigger rocks under your feet at the wrong moment. Vrtača was quite well visited despite not very nice weather.

Ramsons, pinks, a month ago they weren't flowering like this yet. You have a private message. Best regards!

Congrats! For me it already means a lot if I reach the top of Vrtača in summer. You are brave ones, nothing to add, just good luck.

Gear is always a problem for me, expensive as hell. Jacket, pants, helmet, ice axe, crampons, self-belay set, etc I'd rather stay home with incomplete gear.
